Bought these new speakers

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_500SPS4...SPS-406&tp=100

Anyone have any experience with them? I got them because they're made by the same company that makes the head unit in the car, plus I think Alpine's a great company.

Just lookin to see if anyone else has used them and what they think of them.

Re: Bought these new speakers

Seems to be a decent set of speakers there. I have always liked alpine speakers I am also running a alpine deck and I love it! Let us know how they sound when you get them installed!

Re: Bought these new speakers

I was looking them myself to be honest. Let me know how they sound. Are you driving them with an amp and what Alpine head unit are you using?

Re: Bought these new speakers

I'm using the Alpine CDE-7892 head unit, at least I think lol. I do not believe that there is an amp hooked up but I'm not sure about that either lol

Sorry to sound uninformed, but when I got the car from the previous owner, all I knew was that it had an Alpine head unit and it needed 2 dash speakers. I will look into it more and keep you updated. I will also let everyone know how it sounds when everything's hooked up!!

Re: Bought these new speakers

I have heard the 6x9's and alpine makes some nice speakers. The S type are a really nice entry level speaker. I had a tough time deciding between alpine R type and my infinity's that I ended up with.(they were on sale)

If your just looking for a good clear set of speakers for cruising, I think you will be more than happy with those especially if your running them off of the head unit. You wouldn't hear a whole lot of difference between those and alpines higher end stuff until you put them on a decent amp.

All in all those are a nice set of 6x9s

Re: Bought these new speakers

Hey everyone

Still haven't had a chance to install the speakers (school, nasty weather and whatnot). Hopefully this week or next week I will be able to get them in.

But I did read a review on Crutchfield.com that stated that they aren't direct-fit replacements for the stock speakers in 3rd gens. This is according to a review of someone who bought them for their 83 Firebird I think.

This is no problem for me because I like the speakers and will probably just use a saw and cut out whatever needs to be cut out so the speakers fit, like my friend did for his speakers (using a different brand) that didn't fit, but I just thought I would let everyone know, and if anyone has more info on this, please share

oh yeah, and I'm running the CDE-9847 head unit, not the 9872.

Re: Bought these new speakers

alpine type S? those are awesome!!! I installed these myself in my truck and had them for 4 years of cranked up music and never had a single problem and the clarity is GREAT! I had 5x7 in the front and 5x7's in the back i know its a little different in thirdgens 4x6 and 6x9s buy youll love them! they should fit, i bought a set of the same ones in the third gen but like type R i think but they sound just as good. the guy also told me they might not fit cause the magnet in the back and theres not that much room between the sail panel and the actuall body but mine fit in snug with no problems rears were easier than the front!!! GOOD LUCK youll love em.

Re: Bought these new speakers

yeah, the Type-S speakers are really good for the money. I had a set a while back and they sounded really good. it would also do you some good to run a good 10'' sub along with them to help fill in the lows that are missing.

Re: Bought these new speakers

Dan, the car has no amp...I never installed one. Just the headunit, nice 6x9s in the sail panels, and the XM equipment.

You're going to cut the dash to make the speakers fit?

Remember, I do have the component kickpanels and speakers if you decide to go that route now or in the future. The 4x6s won't come close to giving you the same performance. Not trying to be a salesman, just dispensing free advice, which is probably all it's worth!

Re: Bought these new speakers

BTW Dan, can you PM me your address again? I am sure I have it somewhere, but would have to look for it.

This post reminded me to look in my desk drawer and find the Alpine remote for that headunit. I paid extra for it when I bought the setup, but then never used it in the car. Well, I used it maybe once, but realized my arms were long enough to easily change the stations, so the remote was kind of unnecessary. If you want it, I'll mail it out to you.

Re: Bought these new speakers

Yeah the more I think about cutting the dash, the more I don't like that idea. My friend had to do it and it scares me a bit to hack at things lol

I might have to take you up on those kick panel speakers in the near future Dave. The wiring's there already and it would be an easy install with no cutting........ I shall get back to you about that lol

Re: Bought these new speakers

Just a suggestion to reinforce what Bull is saying....don't hack up the dash. I had a pair of 4x6's that sounded great in my dash. (alpines) if you really want round speakers to sound better up there go with infinity 4x6 plates or any other company that makes the plates or go with the kick panels.

Honestly its not worth the effort to cut the dash up. Anything you put up there will sound good with a decent amp driving it due to the angle of the window with the right power. I had a competition system in my old camaro which I had help putting together from a guy that was ranked #2 in IASCA...(God I miss 10% over cost) he even agreed as long as you aren't competing you don't need THAT big of fronts. A good set of 4x6's and a set of good tweets and you will have all the front fill you need for a daily driver. Kicks also help solve that problem.

The weak spot in camaros is the mid fill with the 6x9s...And if you want to take care of that, build a plate and put a mid to high level JL 6 1/2 component system in the place of the 6x9s. (Or kicker free air 6x9's if they are made anymore...man those sounded great)

The design of camaros can make for a great sound system without messing with the stock spots too much no matter what anyone says. Stick the crappiest sub in that hatch and it will sound like gold compared to what others are running lol

Re: Bought these new speakers

Agreed. I have decided to go a different way and hopefully get kick panel speakers and set up that Bull once had in the car. I really don't wanna hack up the dash, plus the sound will be much better with bigger speakers. It's not worth hacking everything up just to fit the speakers in the dash.
