Sounds best in Third gen...Sealed or Ported?
Alright, I know the differences in both... but the constant here is the 3rd gen... Most boxes I've seen are level with the wheel hump... so there is only so much space between the subs and the back deck / window, etc...
I have not heard a lot of 3rd gen's side by side... just opinions, what have you heard and like?
I know ported is harder to get right & I do prefer it, I've heard / made some amazing ported boxes... but I don't have the 3rd Gen experience...
Opinions?
Thanks
Rafael

Re: Sounds best in Third gen...Sealed or Ported?
while i've always wanted to give ported a chance in a 3rd gen, dimensions are a bear with the funky box shapes we have to build due to the hatch layout. A well built ported will have more output (at the expense of power handling), but much more picky when getting specs just right.
If you've got the right sub(s) and take the time to properly build a ported box, I don't think you'll be disappointed. However, a sealed box is still no slouch and a bit more lax when it comes to getting the size just right

Re: Sounds best in Third gen...Sealed or Ported?
I gave ported a shot before someone rear ended me and broke my box in my old camaro, but now I have ported.
I really liked the ported sound, but I also like my sealed. Pretty much impossible to compare, since now I have 400 more watts and a 12" instead of a 10", different brands, etc. However, I would go ported. I wish I had a picture of the box I made. I'm sure you've seen the sub box thread, what I did before was I had a 10" sub in the centre, with two ports on either side. Looked real badass, had lights in the ports and the tubes running down into the box for a real ported setup.
Now I have a 12" in the middle and 2 6x9's on an angle beside it. Went to the 6x9s (by accident) in this car because it has the stock upgraded sound system which I didn't know, and when I went to go drop some 6x9's in the side panels in the back seat, I saw two speakers.
Bottom line: I'd go ported if you have the room in the box.

A single 12" ported or two 10" sealed....you wont hear a difference between the tow.
Plus...a ported box will cost more to make.
Confused yet?

Re: Sounds best in Third gen...Sealed or Ported?
when your buying $300+ dollar subwoofers, buying 1 and a ported box is cheaper than 2 and a sealed.
You really only have room for 2 ported 10's in a regular sub well box, A few 12's have the right spec's for it.
There's prebuilt boxes (or make it yourself) where it angles upwards toward the back, Get some more cubes that way.
About third gen acoustics, there isn't really any hard evidence for these. Some people say it'll hit the back hatch at the perfect angle and sound amazing, some people say it doesn't
My dream camaro system is 4 SA-8's somehow ported in the back

My buddy had that same 4th order band pass design in his '88. In all the years I spent in car audio, I NEVER heard a set of 8's hit like that. Absolutely AMAZING!

Re: Sounds best in Third gen...Sealed or Ported?
I bought a Super Bass Box ported box with a Solobaric L7 10" speaker with dual 2 ohm voice coils, hooked it up to a Memphis Bell 16-MCH-1300 and I cannot sit in the car when it is turned up. The Super Bass Box fits in the cargo well and allows me to mount the Memphis amp on the front wall of the cargo well. That enables me to keep my T-Top storage area intact.

I came across my Orion data sheets (it's poor quality, looks like it was faxed many years ago)... I'm going to try that route... of course not with Orion speakers... I tried to "contact" them, but looks like DEI now owns them... I may post those up soon...

Re: Sounds best in Third gen...Sealed or Ported?
Ive had a many sealed boxes in my car and only one ported one.. the ported one was great but was the whole trunk area with one 12 inch sub.. Considering the Horn Effect we get in our hatchbacks, a great air tight sealed box will hit hard and if you make the dimentions good enough with a sub that has a big X-max your gonna be happy.. Heres the box i just made and its perfect and loud as hell. Unless your going to compititions a sealed box is great, cheep, easy to build, you literly cant mess it up. Just my opinion though/......

Re: Sounds best in Third gen...Sealed or Ported?
I thought flared round ports 4" or bigger and large enough slot ports got rid of port noise?

Re: Sounds best in Third gen...Sealed or Ported?
There are ways to reduce port noise, like angling the edges of a port, or using slot ports, round ports make more noise I'm just not a big fan of ported enclosures with the exception of in a trunk, granted I can't produce the same notes as a ported box but I also don't have any noise in there which is a good trade for be, I built one box for my friends firebird that I liked, it was angled forward with the slot port along the top so it fired towards the open space more
As long as it pounds who cares right? Lol ill stick with my "20th order infinite baffle sealed port enclosure" aka the baffle board maybe when I get some motivation at work ill do a legit fiberglass enclosure I haven't gotten around to doing it because I'm not obligated to like with customers cars

Re: Sounds best in Third gen...Sealed or Ported?
just a question but what was the cubic ft that you was able to get out of the box for your speakers i'm looking at doing the same thing with 2 10" solo-baric L7's and i wanted to make sure i would be able to build a big enough fiberglass encolsure. I'm deployed in afghanistan right now which is the reason i cannot measure it out myself. Thanx

Measurements are included.
Just remember you probably won't hear a difference between a single 12" and two 10's. A single sealed or ported 12" will definitely fit.

Re: Sounds best in Third gen...Sealed or Ported?
Just noticed that, I should get a pic like that with a copy of a Car Fax report in his hand
Maybe this weekend I'll post up pics of my build on its own thread, I had thought I did but turns out I didnt, I just dont seem to have many pics of it finished, or at night when all the LED's are on
Them W7's do pound hard for only two 10's, origanaly I was gunna go with two sealed 13W7's, glad I didnt now

Sealed boxes are more accurate, ported boxes yeilds more spl ........you like hard rock, rap,or a mix of both?
Sealed boxes does all music well, ported boxes are "boomy ".....like already stated then see what the available airspace is .around 3-4 cuft in a third Gen. Hth
