what do you have for a setup going right now ?? I have a 91 305 motor.. which used to have TBI... i switched it all over to carbed... a lot of work i must say but anyways... My car is running extremly rich also and ive been spending alotta time talkin to edelbrock about this..... first off make sure you have the RIGHT FUEL pressure ..... and if you have a 305 like me then what the 1406 comes outta the box at is too rich.... I'm waitin for a reply from the edelbrock technical people... he told me to step it down to a 500 cfm carb but i said i wanted to keep the 600 incase i made future adjustments such as a 350 or something.... so i'm waiting for his reply now on what metering rods i need and what springs... but for sure your going to need to rejet the carb to a leaner position..... if you would like I can tell you what size rods and springs you will need to lean your carb out...... if you want that info just let me know and as soon as edlebrock gets back to me on this i'll be sure to let you know...

Yeah, I have an 86' 305 motor. I don't know what my fuel pressure is though, and it would be great if you could get me that info.

These carbs are the same as the old Carter AFB carbs, way back then Carter had something called a "strip kit" that gave you all of the info you need on setup and a box full of jets, needles, springs and other stuff. Somewhere, some place, these must still be available, generally these carbs just don't screw up, they're a bolt on and forget deal. My suggestion would be to call Carter, if Edelbrock didn't make you happy. I have used their resources for years, they even helped me source out some old Carter side drafts for a 54 vette.

If you had a TBI low end pressure through the electric intank pump is 6 1/2, 7 PSI high end 12-14 PSI. Plenty of pressure to cause problems. Regualte the fuel pressure to 5 PSI. You can find AFPR's in the chrome isle of any parts store, Nappa keeps them behind to counter so you have to ask there. They run $30+ and you need one if your using the electric stock intank pump!

some of those regulators you buy from parts stores are junk though, i bought a 35 dollar one from O'Rielly's and the sucker just quit workin, it didn't work worth crap, some of those are poorly made can't handle much pressure coming into them, and if they don't have a return line then chances are you will burn your pump out real soon and that is not a good thing to happen. so i went with the mallory 3 port return style regulator, it cost anywhere from 70 - 90 dollars but trust me its worth every penny if you want to do things right.....

You can try to rejet the 600, but it may not be right. There still may be some driveability problems at low RPMs.

A 500 should work well out of the box.

If you want to try rejetting the 600 first, try leaning it out:

PRIMARIES
Jets: #1425 (.092)
Rods: #1453 (071 x 047)

SECONDARIES
Jets: #1424 (.089)

Please send any replies to mlin@edelbrock.com

Include a copy of this entire e-mail with your reply in order to help our technical representatives help you more thoroughly.
Thank you.

Sincerely,
The Edelbrock Tech. Dept.

here ya go straight from the horses mouth.... good luck...

Axle/Gears: it's crap...they're stock!
87 TransAm w/ carbd 305 Edelbrock...

Well, just recently I've noticed my oil gauge going to the red zone whenever I stop at a light or whenever a accellerate...then it jumps back up to just under the halfway point on the gauge. I'm not sure if this may be a carb problem or an oil filter/oil leak problem. If anyone can help, keep in mind that I just put two qts of new oil in my car last night(Valvoline Duramax or some****..the 75k+ stuff in the red bottle!)
Thx, -Greg

sounds either like its low on oil,or the bearings are just worn out,try a thicker oil,or some hyperlube.

btw, dont fall into that gimic about the 75k plus mile oils, the ****s all the same.just use a good grade regular motor oil. not the cheepy crap
