can i cut a hole in my hood so i can fit a 14x3 air filter? right now i have an edelbrock performer intake with a holley carb and a 9" filter and its definatly restricting my air flow and i highly doubt a 3" air cleaner will fit under my stock hood. i remember seeing someone with a hole cut in their hood but i cant remember who it was.

will i experience any problems with rain and such? this is a temporary solution for a few months until i get a cowl hood so it will not be permament...

yes you will have lots of problems in the rain, obviously it will soak your aircleaner, do it right once or do it wrong twice.

Why don't you just upgrade to a K&N 2' and get a K&N filter lid for it? Then you will have a lot more flow when you need it.

You don't need to cut a hole in the hood and
a 14 x3" Old 60's GM air cleaner will fit with room to spare if you get the right one. All the aftermarket ones are taller.

The filter lid will butt up against the hood blanket. There isn't enough room there to make it effective.

Open elements have the undesireable effect of pulling engine-heated air into the engine. Either go cool-air ducted dual snorkel, or sealed cowl.

hmmm ok. well then, does ascd's hoods come with their cowl sealed? i hate the look of dual snorkel...

It's a function of the air cleaner, not the hood.

ok im confused now...ive seen some cowl hoods that have a hole cut out for the carb

Right, but it's not going to do much unless you have an airbox around the air cleaner that seals against the hood so that you're only drawing air from the cowl, not from around the engine.

For the seal, imagine the open element base extended out a few inches. Around the air cleaner attached to this extension is foam. When the hood is closed, the hood sits on the foam, the air cleaner sticks through the hole into the cowl space, so all the air comes from the cowl.

you can always get some tin, snips, foam and make a box to seal it up.

I'm running an open element on mine with a 3'' cervini cowl. It helped. I am still thinking about getting a ram air box from www.ramairbox.com would get the air in well i think.

Remove the hood insulator and buy a Moroso drop base 14" air cleaner. This combo will fit under the stock hood with no cutting with a Performer intake and a Holley Carb. You'll even have room for a 1\4" or 5\16" phenolic spacer...which I would advise you to run.

Moroso has one of the largest base drops of any air cleaners on the market.

Here is a picture of my Air Box that is sealed to hood scoop. Not pretty, but it works very well.

I ran a holley street dominator intake, a 670cfm holley street avenger, and a 14x3 k&n dropbase element under my stock hood. It hit alittle but it fit. The intake is almost 2'' taller than stock and that combo still fit.

ok i just ordered the k&n 14x3 air cleaner with a 1 1/4" drop base. i hope it fits

the drop base hits the carb. i think that 60's style drop base will too. what can i do guys? am i stuck with having to get a cowl hood?

Where on the carb does the K&N base hit?

The old GM L-88/Z28 base will fit the holley 4779 but you'll have to remove the choke flap and choke linkage and shorten or remove the choke air horn and shorten the vent tubes. Cut them shorter and on a 45deg angle.

It will hit the HEI distributor cap ( the old factory point cap was smaller). Trimming the back of the base will solve this issue.

Use a 14x3" filter element and a normal common chrome lid.

The carb in the pic is an old 60's OEM factory 780 VS ( ford) which had a shorter choke horn. The 4779 choke horn is taller.

yeah the drop base hits the fuel bowl assembly (where those 2 big nuts are)

you said i have to remove the choke linkage and the choke flap? so that means i wont have a choke?

The GM one won't hit there (see the bulge in the pic) but will hit the HEI distributor. Trim to fit.

The carb will work better with the choke horn removed
because the lid sits closer to the top of the carb with the GM base. it was designed for the 1967-70 corvette with a big block. The carb on those engines had downleg boosters which allowed a lower choke horn and choke plate with more clearance between the choke horn and air clearner lid. Your 4779 has straight leg boosters and a higher choke horn. So yes you may have to remove the choke.

Try an edelbrock plastic 1/2" carb flange spacer ring.

The Moroso drop base filter has two bulges to clear the float bowl adjusting nuts. Return the K&N unit and buy a Moroso Part#65910 for Chrome Plated steel. This will fit.

K&N should have fitted...suppossed to have notches to clear float screws. What Part# did you buy in K&N?

well after some rearranging of my spark plug wires and boots and a little bit of elbow grease, i actually got the k&n air cleaner to fit

so; a 14 x 3" drop base k&n air cleaner WILL fit an edelbrock performer intake with a holley carb (mine is a 4779) and HEI ignition. thanks for the help guys
