I just bought a truck with this carb on it. Is it any good? Does it have reliability issues. It looks pretty new, the guy I bought it from doesn't know much about cars in general and I don't know much about carbs. I've read it's a 600cfm street carb. Im not looking for performance at all, just give me some education on it. Electric choke??

They usually come with an electric choke.

If it's the carb you've got, and it's set up properly (electric choke powered, vacuum/mechanical advance distributor installed and adjusted properly, etc.), then it'll be fine.

Reliability issues are usually caused by neglect or abuse.

Re: 1406 on '83 5.0

The Edelbrock carbs are numbered at the front drivers mounting bolt tab. my 1406 is an electric choke and still on the shelf since I woke up and realized just how good the q-jet really is.

Re: 1406 on '83 5.0

I've got a 84 TA with a 305. It had a Edelbrock 1406 when I bought it. The car ran, but was sluggish and a bit of a gas pig. I just put on an Edelbrock 1403 500 cfm and what a difference. No longer sluggish, better idle and I waiting to see on fuel mileage. The stock 1406 definately over carburetes the 305.
