84 camaro 305 H.O carb issues
Hey guys, its been a little while but i got my camaro started and running!, im having a problem with the fast idle, it sits around 2250-2500rpm while idling i let the engine get upto running temp (105f) and it does not drop to a normal idling speed (in my head would be somewhere around 750-1000rpms) it will run and idle fine no problems there when the choke is closed, when i rev it up to 3500-4000rpms the choke plate will open and the engine will stall and will not start back up till i let it sit and cool off, im not sure why it is doing this, the carb has an electric choke maybe it needs to be replaced?,

The choke should slowly open while the motor is running and be completely open within a few minutes. After that the motor will stay on the fast idle cam until the throttle is opened, the stop is lifted off of the cam and the cam falls away. You can play with the linkage and see how it's supposed to work.
If your choke's not opening correctly check for voltage to the coil WHEN the motor is running.

Sounds good! thanks for the fast reply, i'll check that, as soon as the choke opens the engine will stall but as long as it choked it purr's like a kitten

when looking for vacumme leaks do you just make sure all you vacumme lines on the carb are air tight?

Re: 84 camaro 305 H.O carb issues
Then you take one line at a time and put it on. As you put the lines on, if you have a good seal, the idle shouldn't change. If there is a bad seal, the idle will go higher. Then take the line off, plug it, and do it with another line.
It could be that you have one or more bad lines. Remember, all of these lines are now 19+ years old so it could be any/all of them.
IF, the idle doesn't change and you can't get it to change, then either you have a vacuum leak internal to the carb, where the cab meets the intake, or somewhere else, like where the intakes/heads meet the engine and each other, in this case it would be a bade intake gasket or head gasket most likely.

Then you hook each line up, one at a time and watch the gauge/listen to the motor. This will tell you which line(s) are bad. Ideally the vacuum gauge should move very little if at all when you do this.
Now, this won't work if you have a leak on the intake manifold but, your vacuum gauge will tell you if you have a leak once everything is capped off.
Capped off, I believe your vacuum should read around 22-25HG at idle.
