Idle rates

Ok I been curious about this one for a while. What is supposed to be the ideal RMP rate on a 350 carb stock, automatic? Currently my RPM on Park is at 1500 RPMs and on drive it is set to 1000 PMs after it is warmed up. This is after the work that has been done and its supposed to be stock (as far as I know).

I'm just curious because I had a different RPM range on the TPI but I figured it must be different. Mine was a lot lower on the TPI.

This is my first carb camaro. My other is TPI. This car however has had some work on it in the past year. Since I bought the car over a little over a year ago, I had to get the carb replaced (bad seals, vacuum leaks, among other problems), intake had to get work, water pump had to be replaced (pulley was loose and wiggly), had to get the fan running (wiring was bad), got a new ECM, new cat and flowmasters, and I know I still need a new EGR in order to pass CA smog. I've done some other work like door handles and other cosmetic stuff, but that is besides the point. All engine work was done at a shop.

Factory carb idle was 500 RPMs in drive. There should be a sticker under the hood with information on settings like that.

Not sure if it's still the case, but at one time, too high of an idle was cause for failing the CA smog test.

Vacuum leak will cause a high idle.

Thank you Five7Kid, I'll go ahead and try and reduce the idle.

FtrSpeedy, I'll go ahead and check for vacuum leaks. Supposedly the shop said the car was ready and tuned and only needed a new EGR in order to pass CA smog.

Another quick question. Since I have been told already the EGR needs to be replaced, should I wait until I get the new EGR before adjusting it? Or would it be ok to just adjust the idle in the mean time?

The EGR won't affect idle unless it sticks open, in which case the engine will die (that's how they used to check EGR function, make it open at idle and make sure the engine dies - not sure they still do).

Ok so yesterday I adjusted the idles screws. I got it down from 1000 rpms on drive when warm to 700. I took it for a drive, ran great and all. Today, I went to warm up my car and the idle just went nuts on park. It hiked up to 3500 rpms. So much for running at lower rpms....

Nevermind found my stupid mistake, but at the same time found a new problem. I have smoke coming from below the engine on the passenger side but only smokes after I shut off the engine. Checked the oil and there oil is clean, so need to look further into this.
