fans not working, did search
'88 GTA 305 TPI, 5-spd with dual fans. We overheated it last nite, after driving it for the first time since putting it back together. We were idling in a parking lot when luckily were heard the beep from the digital dash which made me look at the dash and see the temp maxed out. we shut it off & poped the hood, coolant was boiling over to the resevior. The fan never kicked on. We order a relay yesterday, but there are 2 relays for the fans. Which relay controls which fan? Also, if that isn't the problem, what else should I check? temp. switch or sender. Which one controls the fans?

Driver side is primary and passenger is secondary. On my 91, there are three relays up by the brake master cylinder. One for each fan and the fuel pump. IIRC while facing the relays, the middle & left relay are the fan relays (but that's from memory).

The 1992 tpi's have three relays also. The middle is for the fuel relay. The fuel relay will have 5 wires running out of the bottom. The other relays on the left and right will have only 4 wires.
The fan switch is located in the passenger side head by the #6 and #8 spark plugs.
plenty of material on fan switches in the forum.

Not that I know of, my 86 firebird base car had the relays on the firewall as well.

I think GM must have located them in 2 places then. This GTA has it placed on the core support and pass. fender by the canister. Anyway, I think my problem is the connector or wire running to the cooling fan switch on the pass. side head. The outside of the connector body is burned from heat from the manifold. Grounding the connector with the key on should activate the fan right? well its not. Has anyone replaced their connector/pigtail?

I had the problem with my fan switch connector, still the original, came apart in my hands. I got a new one from TPIparts (one of the sponsors). It came with crimp (sp?) connector on it. You can use it like that if you want, but I'm kind of old school and removed the connector and soldered the wires and used heat shrink around the connection. Now when I ground the connector the secondary fan comes on.

The relay near the radiator is for the secondary fan. At least on my 89 Iroc TPI.
