taking out old Water pump

I am replacing my water pump that has just given out. I have removed all the bolts I think. But this thing is still held tight and I can't get it off. Are there any hidden bolts or ones that I might have missed. Any help would be great

Re: taking out old Water pump

IIRC, there are four bolts that hold the water pump on. Someone may have used some RTV on the gaskets, and this is probably what's still holding it on. Take a piece of 2 X 4 and tap it to break the pump loose. Remember to put RTV sealant on the bolts when you put the new pump in since the threads penetrate the cooling jacket.

Re: taking out old Water pump

yep, there is a gasket which has to be shellacked on.
i would not use rtv because it is rather imprecise.
the stuff to use is in a brown bottle and i believe its called indian bond or indian glue or something of that sort.
its a gasket shellac tho, so you shouldn't have trouble finding it or a similar product.

as long as you have the four bolts off, it should come off though
you probably just have to pull

I haven't heard of indian bond before. I've always worked a thin coat of black RTV onto both sides of gaskets with my fingers, then put them on. I also gave the bolts a liberal dose of RTV on the threads and everything has been fine since May.

Re: taking out old Water pump

I put the gaskets on with a light coat of clean engine oil and put liquid teflon on the bolts, not RTV.

Doesn't leak. Neither does my water neck that I cleaned both sealing surfaces of and installed the gasket slightly damp with coolant, and once again, liquid teflon on the bolts.
