Can someone please explain to me why it is not a good idea to have a cooling fan wired on at all times? Besides the extra wear and tear on the fan,,will it actually cause an engine to overheat? I have an aluminum shroud coming this week,and the only Hole that will be in this shroud is the opening for my 16inch 3000 cfm fan.(wich is wired to come on with the ignition) but,i have not expierienced overheating,,but my temps DO climb if i would go up a large hill,,or run it hard..ect.....Am i going to run into problems with air flow if i run my car like that? and also,,,would fans on the front actually do anything,,if i were to install 1 or 2? thanks for any answers.

Why would keeping a fan on all the time overheat a motor? That makes no sense. Sure its more load on the charging system but I dont think those fans draw that much amperage.

Engines under more load like going up hills will have temps climb but as long as things stabilize at a safe level between 170-210 deg or so, you are fine. Leaving fan on the entire time will delay how long it takes to heat up and if its cold out, it may keep engine from getting to a higher temperature but there really arent any negative effects that I can think of.

I know with my turbos, stuff gets HOT. I needed both fans on most of the time since I dont have an oil cooler and the rad isnt big enough for the system really, especially with the electric water pump. fan shrouds help alot to keep air pulling thru the rad. In the winter time when its 30-40 deg out, my car will run fine under 200 deg without fans on. With both fans on I could get it down to 150-160 deg. Just the way it is. I just alter them on and off to maintain 180-ish deg if possible. Summer time I tolerate 200's at stops, usually 180's highway

Okay,thanks .I was just wondering because i read somewhere that if i leave the fan on all the time,,that it would somehow restrict the airflow at highway speeds?..I mean my fan is pulling 3000cfm through the rad,at all times..i just dont understand how it would restrict airflow coming in at highway speeds.

What I have heard is that the fan cannot keep up with the air coming in at highway speeds when you have a shroud. Some shrouds come with flaps to allow the excess air to pass through under those conditions. Whether that will cause overheating I don't know.

It my experience is has not caused overheating. Shroud actually cooled better on my car at all conditions.

I have no over heating problems mainly because I still have my rubber air diverter still up front under my car. I took it off once just to see the difference and it made a 50 degree difference on cooling my engine. So I just put a manual switch for my engine fan on the dash and only turn it on if I get up to 200 degrees which is very rare.

Makes sense. Gas mileage and heat are the only things I've heard suffer from running the fans full time. Never heard overheating.

Okay,,i guess my setup wont cause an overheat condition..but it Could cause the temps to go up a little??..you said gas mileage and HEAT...also i wonder if i should make some flaps on my shroud when i get it,,for when im racing down the highway?..like make some vents and put hinges on them?..in case the air coming in would overpower my fan..would it be worth it to do that? or just leave it alone?

Car never had one and I never seemed to have any issues...but I never measured my oil temps. Never had a concern when I was n/a. Now that I have twin turbos, the oil is getting super heated in those hot housings so I SHOULD have a cooler on the car now. After a long drive I loose a good bit of oil pressure and its due to the oil getting hot. I've even run thicker oil before to try and combat the problem.
I have a cooler laying on the shelf, just need about 10-15ft of -10AN line and a new o-ring for my oil filter adapter piece. I'm just running out of room to mount things in this car

Heat as in the heater in the cabin. I know customblackbird, a member on here who knows quite a bit about keeping things cool since he is running a big block ford motor in his car, cut vents into his shroud. This is the shroud I ordered to keep my 400 cool. Haven't received it yet so I can't attest to how good it is.

I've replaced 2 fan motors now.. because it was grounded to be on all the time... They need a break once in awhile.
