Confused or just dumb... ECM/Datalogging ?

Hey Guys... I am trying to figure out what I am doing here...

I have been using WinALDL with a 1 transistor cable, getting data from my '165 MAF ECM. The data seems okay, but I hate being in the 10k ALDL Mode to get data, as the car just acts totally different. What is actually different in 10k ALDL Mode?

I decided to build a 2 Transistor cable tonight, so I built it, and it works about the same, but I still need the 10k resistor across A and B. I also tried getting some data on ALDL Pin M, and again I got data, which seemed fine. But everywhere I go, I need 10k ALDL Mode to get data, is this normal with the '165 ECM? Does it make a difference what pin I get data from?

I understand ALDL is 160 baud, and my ECM puts out data at 8192 Baud. I tried to get Craig Moates software to connect, but it wouldn't connect on either the Pin M or Pin E. Then I read that I should be using a MAX 232 Cable... Will Moates software work with a 2 transistor cable?

Finally, what other software is out there for data logging with the '165 MAF ECM... is there any software that works at 8192 Baud and a 2 transistor cable?

I just feel like I'm missing something at 160 baud, and I don't like the 10k ALDL mode, it just doesn't feel the same as the regular mode my car runs in. I appreciate any help you guys can give me, I've read and read, then read some more on here, but I can't get the answers to the questions I have. Thanks everyone!

There is a bunch of items that are changed while in ALDL mode, added SA timing and a different commanded idle speed are the most apparent.

I need 10k ALDL Mode to get data, is this normal with the '165 ECM? Does it make a difference what pin I get data from? Yes, need the 10K resistor. The 8192 data comes from a different ALDL connector pin then the 160 baud data. IIRC E & M are the two pins, so use the other one from the 160 baud connection for 8192 data.

AFAIK it will. Has more to do with the laptop serial port.

You will need to the 10K resistor to kick off the 8192 baud mode. I am thinking that it may then be removed. Check Moates software doc's for more info on this. IIRC he changed something in how it operates.

I can't get any data no matter what with Craig Moates' software. I tried Pin M, Pin E, with a 10k resistor across pin A and B, without the resistor... nothing. The only program I can get to communicate is WinALDL.

I don't understand the 10k ALDL mode, it makes my car smoke, raises my idle to 1000 RPMs, makes me ping at WOT or anywhere above 3000 RPMs, and makes my car feel like it's running crappy.

I did get some logging done with WinALDL, but it's like always, lots of Pings, and it bounces rich to lean... the O2 sensor will be at .680 volts one second then at .002 volts the next second. It bounces up and down with every refreshment of data that comes in.

Is there something wrong with my ECM?

If you want to look at some of the data I have got, go here.

Help? I'm still clueless...

Not sure why you can't connect at 8192. There are some threads on the DIY PROM baord that address this.

As far as the raised idle & pinging, yes, that is what happens. Best bet is to change those bin locations. Set the ALDL SA to 0 and set the ALDL idle to whatever speed your engine normally idles at.

The O2 bouncing up & down is normal, the ECM does that on purpose.
