Need ECM for 1982 Trans Am with Crossfire Injection

I finally diagnosed my non operable hood louver and tracked it to the ECM. If I jumper the relay, the flap opens, but I have no signal from the ECM. I tested the wire for the hood louver at the ECM and nothing.
What are my options here? My local parts guy sells a Cardone rebuild, but I am not sure if I trust it.
The 83 computer seems like it was an improvement, but I would also have to find a PROM.
Is it possible to repair these computers? I know I was able to repair a Ford computer once, but there is no info online for this one.
Everything else involving the computer is fine. Not the fastest computer, but the car runs good.

Re: Need ECM for 1982 Trans Am with Crossfire Injection

Most likely as quad-driver failed. They fail due to a solenoid or relay coil shorting out. Before replacing the ECM be sure to check the resistance of the various devices controlled by the ECM's q-drivers. Such as CCP solenoid (if present), EGR solenoid, AIR pump solenoid(s), and TCC solenoid.

As long as the q-driver didn't burn a hole in the PCB they can be replaced. Look for 16-pin DIP packages near the harness connector. If bad, 99% of the time they have physical damage.

Are they all controlled by the same driver?

I don't know. A quad-driver has 4 outputs, but GM will double up some. This way a TCC solenoid is driven with 2 of the 4 outputs. There may be two q-driver chips in the ECM.

There is good q-drvr info in this thread:

Pic's and all....

Re: Need ECM for 1982 Trans Am with Crossfire Injection

I opened up the computer to see if there were any burnt chips. There were none. I tried tracing the pin out on the board to a 16 pin chip, but the first chip it hits is a 9 pin chip with a metal heat sink on top of it - which looked fine. Unless there is a short on the board, none of the chips look burned. I am going to try to acquire a used computer to swap in to see what happens. Still runs fine, so not the end of the world. It has been like that for as long as I have owned the car which is like 24 years. I have never heard that flap open.

I have an entire crossfire setup I'd sell if you are interested. complete with all computers and wiring.

Thanks - but I finally got my hands on an 83 ECM and put it in the car. I haven't been able to take her for a ride due to weather but she seems to start and idle better. The hood louver also works in diagnostic mode now so I am assuming it will work at WOT. I have to take her for a cruise later in the week.

hi so you solved by replacing with a 1983 ecm?

Yes
the 83 computer is a direct swap and the car runs better. Both are not easy to find but if you are trying to find one, try to get your hands on the 83 ecm.

Re: Need ECM for 1982 Trans Am with Crossfire Injection

Hello, I have a 1982 Z28 with Crossfire and my hood louvers recently stopped working. I find this thread very useful. I was wondering where the relay is located for the hood louvers so I can try and run some tests.
