upgraded to 6E quick Q

Finally just upgraded my 86 $32 to 89 $6E 305 TPI auto (APYM). disabled VATS in chip and disconnected CSI on engine. Starts and runs pretty good. A lot easier than I expected!

Q - i know it prob needs some tuning, but is it harmless to run as-is indefinately?

I am not yet comfortable with tuning, so would like to leave until a later date. I can data log pretty easily though if there is anything I should look for before running daily driver with this chip.

Thanks for any advice.

Any significant mods? If not, then should be no problem. Just check for "normal" operation, look for excessive knock or BLMs, then give it some heck and see if it feels ok.

nope, just whats in sig (no engine mods, just slp cai). was a lil rough in the beginning, but seemed much smoother later (prob once in closed loop).

i will hook up to ALDL and get some initial readings anyway...

thanks man...

OK, went for a drive and did some logging.

Some questions, plz excuse my newbieness:

1- looks like i am lean at IDLE (BLM's ~ 150), but at throttle a much better value. is this a chip tweak? or something else, fuel pressure, etc? where to start on this one?

2- a little bit when accelerating, and much more when decelerating, i will get an O2 sensor reading of 4.44mv?! was is with that...cant be normal? suggestions?

i attached an xls for more info..

any help appreciated...

I can't open that file as an .xls. try again, and don't take the file extension off the file before zipping it.

Idle BLMs might be aging injectors, might be vacuum leak or two. Is the Injector constant in that bin set to 19 lb/hr, like it's supposed to be?

Sorry bout that dont know what happened..

Here you go in .txt

Both Single and double fire are set to 19.48 (I did not modify).

It is high BLM in idle and decel actually, in case that wasnt clear.

Thanks!

When you are scanning your ALDL, do you see strange numbers? Like I see the rpms at 1 and then 41. The TPS seems to be at 3000 and the Oxygen Sensor is up at 300??

Are you using the correct ALDL definition file?

J & H,
Yes I am using the correct definintion (165/6E). I dont see any wacky numbers like you suggest. You might be looking at the columns wrong or with word wrap on? The first column is just the sample #. THen TPS(0.65), MPH(0), RPM(575), MAF, etc.

Looks lean everywhere, and you're getting lots of knock and knock retard at higher loads (up to 10 degrees retard). Re-check your base timing, and set it to 6 degrees (or whatever is in the bin for base spark advance on that 305). Then, log again, and look for less "Knock Ret" at high loads.

The lean could be a vacuum leak, exhaust leak, or a tired MAF, or slightly low fuel pressure (maybe regulator is getting weak, or something). If you want, you can REDUCE the injector constant to make it richer again, reduce it to about 17.2. Maybe 86's used lower fuel pressure, I dunno.

The 4.44 mV is during fuel cutoff, where the engine is just pumping air, saving you some gas while you coast to a slower speed. It's 100% normal.

Thank You RedNGold for such a clear and helpful answer. That type of help keeps me from being too intimidated by PROM work.

Sorry to bug you but the situtation continues I am trying my best to go slow however.

I set the timing to 6 dbtc which is also value in chip. At the same time, I adjusted the injector constant to 17.2. (admittedly I should have gone for drive right after setting the timing and log, but i didnt). So after putting in 17.2 chip i went for drive and log. The numbers in the log (attached) show much better BLM and knock retard gone. However, the driveability was not too good. It felt like not much was going on when I stepped on gas.

So I thought maybe too much of a change so I tried 18.3, and back to 19.4, but driveability still sucked, and BLMs at those values were back to 150+. Also the temp was climbing pretty high for just a short drive around the block.

So, Im not sure if driveability is due to timing or chip change. One other thing I noticed was that the ECM was quite warm/hot... is this normal? And where to go from here...

Thanks again!!

Check the timing AGAIN, actually. You might have set it to 6 ATDC, or maybe the hold down clamp is loose, OR, you forgot to reconnect the EST Bypass wire when you were finished, OR, you set it to 6 without disconnecting the EST Bypass wire.
Not sure what color EST Bypass is on the older 86 wire harness, but the ones I've seen have been a single tan wire with black stripe. It has a weatherpack connector usually sticking out of the wire harness near the firewall in the engine bay over in the area of the AC tubes on the passenger side. Disconnect that to set base timing to 6.

You were Right Again! I totally burned out on that EST wire.. sorry.

Anyway... running back to normal now... so happy... however, got some Knock back, prob not quite as high as before but still there. BLM's lower at least..

This capture is with the 17.2 Inj Const. Is this close enough for daily driver, and/or to give it heck?

Thanks for hangin in there with me..

BLMs still look a little high in the graph. I'd try the lower injector constant again.

I'd go hunting for a tear in the tube in front of the throttle body, or another vacuum leak, as well.
