NEW motor

Quick opinion question..:
I will be sending my 350 block and rotating assembly out tomorow. I am having the cylinders bored, it's already .030 over. and i'm having it balanced and whatever else might need to be done. I have arp bolts already, stage 1 rods, a good .010 under crank, and the rest is just basic. anyway, I need a good set of blower pistons, for a good price. I am doing the assembly myself. I looked at the speed pro blower pistons, but they are only made .030 over (my block is already .030 before the bore). THe SRP's make .040 and .060 over, but they are pretty expensive. It has to be a blower piston and make around 8.5:1 compression w/ 66cc heads. and hopefully cheaper than the SRP's. anyway. PLEASE GIVE ME SUGGESTIONS on a piston and the suggested ring gap.
Also, i am probably upgrading my cam, it want a supercharger cam, to work with my superam, and street 350, and hopefully pass emssions. my trickflow heads will only accept up to .525 lift anyway. there is some debate wether or not 112 is better than 114 for a s/c. Also is the LPE 220 cam a good grind. I would have that duplicated by another company. thanks a lot! -justin

I don't know how JE Pistons compare price wise, but you might want to give them a call to find out:

http://www.jepistons.com

I bought my JE forged dished pistons for a 305 from Flatlander Racing (by far, the best price).

On a cam, contact Cam Motion for a custom grind:

http://www.cammotion.com

That's where I bought mine.

thanks for the info.. I think the JE's are more expensive, SRP is their cheaper brand. Anyway, i will contact both companies, however, anybody have a good idea on a cam for my setup, or any other ideas for good blower pistons cheaper than the SRP's? thanks again

Should have mentioned before that Cam Motion makes custom cams. They do not have any "on the shelf". The info you supply to them is rather extensive, but necessary to design the optimum grind for your application. Their prices are very competitive to any other cam manufacturer too. In fact, I paid $290 for mine when Crane was charging $342 for a custom grind.

willie,
well, that is a great lead., however, do I really need a custom grind? Are there any other cams out there that will fit my needs? Thanks for your wisdom!!!
thanks -justin

Probe industries has a forged dish top piston that makes 8.5:1 with a 64cc head. Flatlander racing has 'em for $356.

bad news:
the block is cracked in the # 5 cylinder. damnit. i have to sleeve it or get anotehr block. plus i found out that summit sent me a motor w/ KB hyperuetectic pistons instaed of forged trw's . that's why it broke, but i bought the motor so long ago, so i'm not sure if i can fight it. I want them to send me a new block or pistons to make up for it, what do you think. I bought it like 7 yrs ago, but it still was misrepresented. they shouldhave told me there was different pistons. it was on backorder at the time.

I don't think you will get anywhere after 7 years. Give 'em a call though you might get somewhere - the worst they will say is no. And sleeving a block doesn't hurt or weaken it. I would just go ahead and sleeve the one cylander.

yeah i think i will sleeve it. i have splayed main caps. don't want to get another block like that,.. more expensive. as far as summit, i know it's been a long time, but the principle that they sold me something other than they told me I was getting. That is my point and they should make right by me. don't you agree? and btw, how are those Probe pistons? they are cheaper than the srp's ...thanks -jsutin

I understand about the parts being wrong but they can easily shrug it off saying that you still put them in the motor and that they worked for 7 years. shrug. As far as the probe pistons go I haven't used them but have heard nothing but good. They are fairly popular with the 5.0 crowd. Probe is a pretty new company as far as hot rodding goes (only 10 years ;/) so they don't quite have the reputation as the bigger names do. BUt their pistons are feature packed and I defenatly will use them when i go to build my motor.

Do you have recipts/ S.O. or any type of documentation stating that you were supposed to get a long block with TRW forged pistons?

well,, I have the part # on the invoice or packing slip and reciept..but it doesn't sate what pistons it has.. However, I think i might have the catalog w/ the motor in it..w/ forged pistons.. the catalog that came out right after i got my motor showed the same motor w/ KB hyperuetectic pistons... I don't know if that helps... anyway, I called to ask them to look up the part # and tell me about it,.. but they said i had to call tech because it is such an old # and they might be able to give me info..If I get that info, then maybe i can hang them. what do you think.. thanks a lot! -justin

I have a feeling that you aren't going to get anything. Sounds like they changed the contents of the motor after you ordered but before you got the new catalouge. Kinda ****ty but not too much you can do about it. Look at it this way it lasted for 7 years so you go good use out of it. You can try calling them and bitching up a storm it might get you somewhere. I don't know how summit is about that kind of stuff but agian it is worth trying. Just rember that if you get no where with the first person ask to talk to their boss. Be a royal pain. You are justified.

You guys are gonna love this../ I just got off the phone with summit, got all my pistons, bearings, rings, gasket kit etc. for COST!!!!!! what a deal. I wasn't sure that they'd back up their products, after all, it was an 8 yr old motor but they did. I got forged blower pistons, and all the other stuff for $484. It probably should have been $750.

That is really cool. I will feel confident in buying from summit in the future.
