Re: Opinions on Tunercat
I highly agree, Tuner Pro or Tuner Pro RT (real time) for emulation.. I purchased the Moates Autoprom with update and the G1 adapter and it worked great.. Tunerpro is free and just has an annoying window the 1st 10 seconds when you start it..

Re: Opinions on Tunercat
The autoprom has a built in connector for the Aldl on a 6 foot cord. Additionally uses another ribbon cable that connects to the ECM for Real-Time tuning while engine is running.

I have the Autoprom that was upgraded, 5 chips, the extended cabling, the G1 Adapter and yes, I am getting rid of it as I upgraded to XFI fuel injection. Everything worked great.

Re: Opinions on Tunercat
I like Tunercat since it has more supported platforms, but Tuner Pro seems fine and has a scanner with it.
I do lots of tuning on many cars so Tunercat works better for me.

Re: Opinions on Tunercat
For someone starting TunerCat is much easier. Can buy complete package for your car for tuning, cables adapter etc... Including buying a data logger with it. These are pretty much set to use with ease. But no real editing, you get what's there and it works well.
TunerPro RT has lots more capabilities and can be a daunting first step but once involved will enjoy all the possibilities.
But you can't just make adjustments to your chip/bin file without having data! So with TunerCat you also need a data logger. WinALDL is free but is limited on data. Datamaster is an excellent program but costs more, like TunerCat every different ECM needs an additional definition and then Datamaster needs another definition, each one costs more.
TunerPro RT not only does the chip/bin file adjustments and capable of burning but also has Data logging. There are also built in programs that are all extras on TunerCat. All def files are community built and no cost. You can change them or add to them. Make notes on each parameter you have changed and save that file for that car.
For chips, just bypass all there is to know about the stock chips which need UV light to erase along with a burner. Reliability is an issue as well. Look to Moates for a new EEPROM chip, adapter and burner. With this it's a click of the mouse to erase and program. Chip will erase and burn 100% reliable for 1000's of times.
I'm not sure TunerCat has more definition files? I've never found a gap that needed to be filled? Maybe the def files are not as well developed for a 4 cylinder Corsica, but all well known applications are covered.
In conclusion TunerPro RT will do way more for a lot less money. Learning curve is endless, there is so much in there. Basics are easy to learn. PLEASE support this $1000 piece of software you can use for free by paying the $39. registration fee so the author will continue updates and all can enjoy the benefits!
If you need a hobby and have the time and desire to get into this then by all means enjoy! If life is stressful and your adding chip tuning to the load it won't be a good thing! Pay someone in person to tune the car and move on with life. This is very addictive and also very rewarding. But very time consuming as well.
Now if you know you have time and desire and a little cash to get going then just go for it and get an AutoProm, adapter and TunerPro. If it's for one car only then look into an EBL. EBL is a far superior EFI tuning system, all the capabilities with the simplicities built in!
There's also new ALDL cable coming out soon that will be in the $25 range.
HTH!

Re: Opinions on Tunercat
Tunercat Realtime. I've tried Tunerpro from time to time and it's OK, but the newer version of realtime tunercat really is nice.
The only downside is that it doesn't perform ALDL logging, however, I'd use datamaster over tunerpro for that also.
