I desperately need help

I don't feel like writing the whole story out, so my fan wasn't working and I noticed the engine getting hotter so I pulled over. I saw the 2 wires coming up from the fan and one was fine, but the previous owner made the other connect to an all red wire. The two wires coming from the fan were black with one red stripe running on either side. My uncle, who is a wiz with cars, told me to just put the wire that was connected to the red wire to the positive part of the battery. It ran, but now I have to disconnect and reconnect the wire to the battery everytime I go somewhere until Sunday when I can get to my uncle's house. Will that be alright or can you guys help me out? Also the wire running from the fan that was connected to the all red wire, the other half was just lying inside the engine bay not connected to anything. When I hooked the wires together, the fan didn't run, so maybe the other half of the wire is fried? I also already checked out the fuses, but I didn't test them because I don't have that equipment, but any suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

here's what you need to do...first off you have a cooling relay on the firewall on the driverside. it should be the one closest to the intake. You might see three or two relay's depending on the vehicle. Some have cooling relay, fuel pump relay, and something else. Pull apart the wiring harness on the bottom from these relay's and you'll see your black wire with the red strip on it along with a black wire and three others. That would be your cooling relay. Run a wire from the fan (black/red) to that wire you see on the relay(black/red). Ground the other one from the fan(all black). start your engine when your engine heats up test it out and see if the fan turns on. If not, then your relay might be shot. They are 35.00 at a parts store. If that doesn't work you might need to bring it somewhere or let your guy look at it. If you ever get sick of it you can turn the fan on by yourself with a toggle switch wired under your dash or something, but that is tachy sometimes, and a pain to turn on and off all the time. But it is better than getting out of your can every time and going under the hood,....lol email me if you have anymore questions.

Well I took my car to my uncles and as usual, he fixed it. What happened was the wire running from the thing on the firewall, (tired can't thnk too straight) had shorted out so the previous owner had cut it and had a spare wire connect to the wire running from the fan and then connect directly to the fan's fuse. Well my uncle had these connectors and instead put two connectors on the end of the two wires and put a fuse on it. He says that the car will use the fuse he put in there before the other one. Also the fuse for the fan in the fuse box had burnt out so we put another one in there. Hope no one got confused, but my fan does now work. I would've tried your idea 1991rscamarodem, but I'm not to good with electrical stuff and I decided just to let my uncle handle it. Thanks anyways.
