Weak power locks and windows

I'm going to be installing an alarm with remote locks. My power locks are really weak at the moment. They take 5 or more presses to open or close fully. Are there any common fixes for this? the car is a '91 z28.

Also, my power windows are pretty weak. They go up and down pretty slow, make funny noises and the drivers side window goes up crooked, such that I need to pull the front up about a half inch while holding down the window switch to get it fully closed.

Both common problems. Clean and relube with white grease and you'll be surprised.

I understand aging grounds don't help the problem. Do both thing and all should run like new.

Re: Weak power locks and windows

I agree with JamesC. I had a lock that would not fully lock the door when activated. I went the cheapo quick route, not recommending it here only saying it is possible to do, and blasted the actuator with a liberal stream of WD-40. I also went ahead and sprayed all the other moving parts within the mechanism just to be safe. Has worked fine for me ever since. My power windows are slow as well, but they were since the day I rolled it off the dealership lot. I am used to my painfully slow windows, so I have no advice for you on that, but NEEDAZ has some good suggestions as well in tackling that one.

Re: Weak power locks and windows

I just replaced the actuator, hit the lock parts with white lithium grease, removed the spring on the actuator bracket assembly, and also bent the actuator bracket tabs in ward tighter on the lock rod. It actually works now.

Sounds like you have mechanical issues to deal with, before addressing the slowness.

Just curious - what is the benchmark for slow windows in these cars? How long did a single transit up-down or down-up take from the factory? Can you time a transit now?

Lube did nothing for me, but re-wiring with heavy cable and relays got me from a 12 second transit to 3.5 sec. Still not lightning but a massive improvement. Another member did this a while ago, but reported no change - though he started with 4 sec transit iirc. Just wondering what we all consider 'slow'.

For door locks, The best thing I did was to remove the door latch from the door and soak it in parts cleaner for awhile then blow dry, oil it up and reinstall.

Re: Weak power locks and windows

same happened to me when i began rebuilding my GTA after it sitting for 4 years in my garage. power locks took multiple times to lock (i'm talking like 6 presses!). Windows also moved ridiculously slow. Just to get everything moving for the time being, i got a can of silicone spray and sprayed all the parts i could see with the window all the way down. I also lubed up the run channel and weather stripping the window rides on and she's doing alright now! and YES i do plan on taking the door panel off and re-greasing all the linkages in there. this is just temporary

Yeah, that's what they all say. 12 seconds is way too slow compared to when they were new. 4 seconds sounds livable, but I'd guess that new they were closer to 2-3 seconds. They were pretty fast when new. Mine have slowed down from years of grease hardening and dirt, but they still work ok. I plan to take the panels off and lube all that stuff in the near future.
