Left Turn Signal Short Circuit... any ideas?

Hey guys. I hate posting only when I have problems, but I just can't seem to solve this one on my own. I got my car back from the shop after a couple of weeks, and the left turn signal has a short circuit. The right signal works fine, but when i hit the left signal, the flasher just clicks alot (indicating short circuit). The dash indicator also doesn't light.

Also, to be absolutely sure its a short, I replaced the flasher with an electronic unit, and the turn signal fuse blew. Here's my problem- I've checked all the wires that I can, and none of them are shorted. The only thing I can't see is when the wire loom routes into the frame of the car- I have no way of accessing it in there.

At this point, I'm ready to just rewire the entire signal, since I would really only have one wire to run. Where would I pick up the wire in the passenger compartment? I see the wire run up above the steering column, but then I lose it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you checked the bulb sockets also.As they age sometimes they split allowing the wires to contact each other.Another thing some older, pre '92,don't like the electronic flasher units(and heavy duty ones can cause problems too). And GM's foward thinking when a bulb in the flasher circuit goes bad the turn signal for that side is constant on instead of flashing.

EDIT:I have to say that is an interesting and sharp looking body kit on your car.

Re: Left Turn Signal Short Circuit... any ideas?

Thanks for the compliment. Actually, due to the body kit, I'm not running any original bulb sockets, so unfortunately that isn't the issue. I also tried disconnecting each new socket individually, but to no avail.

The problem is that the turn signal isn't a constant on- the flasher unit just clicks very quickly and nothing lights up. I looked it up in the Chilton's manual, and that indicates a short circuit. I just can't find a short circuit anywhere.

I'm ready to just clip the wire right at the source and run my own, but i can't find that source. I see it in the diagrams, but i just can't physically find it. Any tips?

Thanks for the quick reply!

It wasn’t ‘forward thinking’, it was the lowest cost way for a flasher unit to be designed.

The failure of the unit to stop or operate very slowly upon bulb failure was a happy accident.

You need to divide and conquer.

Trace the
light blue wire located at the larger of the connectors on the right side of the steering column.

You will come to a juncture where it branches to the rear.

Disconnect at that juncture.

Remove the left turn and marker bulbs.

Using an ohmmeter, probe the
light blue wires you now have at the juncture.

The one that reads 0 or near 0 ohms is the line with the short.

Physically trace to find the insulation rub-thru, or other problem that is causing the short to occur.

Happy Racing!

I checked the column: The hazard / directional switch is good so I have to keep searching. My alarm is the next and then the tailer hitch harness.

it was the instrument cluster. the printed circuit board became unglued and was touching muiltple contacts at the same time. Causing crazy shorts like the hazard lights starting the car and the left turn signal staying on.
