Electrical Problem 92 RS

The car has an electrical issue. The car won’t turnover at times. You turn the ignition switch to crank and nothing happens. I pulled the alternator and it tested ok. I pulled the starter and it tested ok as well. I replaced the battery terminals and it gave the same results. Whenever this condition occurs, I can shorten out the starter with ignition key on and the car starts with no hesitation. I had the car looked at by AutoTech and they replaced the battery and positive battery wire to the starter. The car still has the same issue. I determined, the VATS system sometimes blocks the ignition start. If I hit the door locks then VATS system blocks the ignition. I unlock the doors and it starts up. Other times nothing works except jumping the starter.

Car's Background: It's a project car. The owner before me switched it from manual transmission to automatic transmission. The car has a carb.

Car Is Not Cranky . . . . SO I AM !!!!!!

If it was the VATS the engine would not start even if you use the jumper wire.

That’s consistent with a PO installed Security System.

The VATS doesn’t have to be involved, as some security systems disble starting in other ways besides the VATS.

You can check the wiring on the car to try to locate a PO installed device.

Also, a Security System can disable the ability to start by opening and closing the door, no Key Fob activation is required, which might make you think the problem is sometimes random.

Nina,
Thank you for eliminating the VATS. What is a PO?
