If your car originally had a gauge cluster in it - you could simply install a V8 cluster or specifically a tach, or you could add a converter to correct the V8 distributor pulses to a V6 signal so your existing V6 tach will be correct. A stock V8 Tach will probably be much cheaper than a Tach converter.

If your car had a 'dummy light" cluster than you can install a V8 gauge cluster and simply install the sending units needed for the gauges. ( Temp, Oil press ) The wiring is already present in your dash harness - you would just need to add the V8 gauge cluster and the sending units to make it all work. That's only true for Camaro - Firebirds with dummy light dash clusters do NOT have the gauge wiring present in the dash !

you could always go to an autometer tach

i already have a procomp ultralight 3 3/8 tach and 3 3/8 speedo electronic up to 200 mph. but i was just wanting to try and keep it more stock looking inside. i might just get the covan classic instrument pannle and add the rest of the pro comp gauges. if i could find a v8 gauge cluster cheap i would rather do that. just for now.

You don't even need the whole cluster - Just the Tach. V8 tachs have a 30/60 oil pressure guage and the V6 ones show 40/80 on the oil pressure guage.

Hey John
I'm doing a gauge swap from a V6 firebird that has dummy lights and bought the gauges from a V8 305.....do u know best route to wire up this gauge cluster since the OE wires are not present on the firebirds?

You'll need more than just the gauges for a Firebird. This is from the tech section - a search would have found it.

Re: swaping v6 instruments out for v8?

The Way I work; I would swap the complete dash wiring harness. I would rather unplug - plug in the right dash harness rather than cutting, splicing, running additional wires.

I'm sure that it would be easy enough to add a few wires to the cluster plugs and run them thru the firewall for the Tach and/or electric speedo - but I'd rather plug and play !
