Need help troubleshooting fog lamp curcuit on '88 IROC
Installed new fog lamps and they don't work. No Juice at lamps. Went to the switch below the headlight switch. Doesn't work. Took it out and checked it with the continuity tester on my Fluke II. Found it to be intermitent. Soaked it with contact cleaner and it seems to be good. Still doesn't work the lights. I get 4 volts on one lead coming in with the lights on. This is with the high beams on. Switch to low beam and I get 8 Volts on the same lead. What am I doing here??? Anybody been down this road before ???

I'm not going to be much help. Other than to say the fogs should turn off when the high beams are on.

I would check grounds first. They are correct, the fog lights go off when the high beams are turned on. The fact you have voltage at the wire, indicates that power is there. The only other parts are the relay and the ground. Check to see if you have the same power before the relay and after, or power going to the relay and then on to the fog lights. Then check ground. With electrical, more often you are looking for what is not wrong than what is wrong. narrow you search for the problem, eliminate what is good and the bad show itself.

The relay is in the upper LH front corner of the engine compartment. Is the dash indicator light for the fog lights working? If it is, still thinking ground problem. Check continuity on the relay, then check continuity to fog lights. If that works, take a wire and run a seperate ground from the battery down to the fog lights, and any other grounds you find in that system, trying the fog lights each time.

Thanks ! I'll go look for the relay now. When you say LH do you mean buy the fuel pump relay or the fan relays? My indicator lights up when I turn the head lights on but the green "on" bulb doesn't work. I will look at my grounds....

There should be a BOSCH relay in front of the windshield washer tank, against the fender.

Re: Need help troubleshooting fog lamp curcuit on '88 IROC
Got it ! It wasn't working so I cut it in half with a coping saw. the N/C contacts had no continuity so I cleaned them and bench tested it last night at work. Taped the lid on it and inatalled it today. Now, when I turn the lights on the dash lights don't work and the turn signals both come on constant but dim. Definatly a ground problem. Anybody know where the ground is for the fog lamps? It's raining here and I'd rather spend a minimal amount of time laying on the ground trying to find it.... Thanks Guys ! ! ! !
