Car: 89 firebird rs
Engine: 2.8
89 2.8 starter relay
i have an 89 2.9 firebird
I have been attempting to jump the starter relay and been semi successful.
I have a wire going from the yellow thick wire to the green thick wire and when i go hit the key it cranks and it wants to fire up for like 3 seconds and then it turns off. i checked all the grounds from the car
I also have the orange vats wire off the key lock cylinder(it ripped off) if this helps....
Do i have bad ground somewhere?
Am i jumping the relay wrong?
Do i have to ground the relay through one of the wires
Any tips would be much appreciated!

Re: 89 2.8 starter relay
if the starter kicks at all, the problem isn't the relay. A bad relay will prevent any power from getting to the starter.

Re: 89 2.8 starter relay
well i connected a wire from the starter then i stick it on the postive post of the battery and it does the same like it wants to fire up but when i do it this way the car hesitates to turn over more
should i go check my starter at autozone?
(its like 1-2 years old)
oh yeah i did the relay jump because they dont sell them where i live and i have to order it and it will take like 3 days with a cost of 23$
(plus i didnt feel the relay click thats why i decided to jump it)

Re: 89 2.8 starter relay
to me it sounds like your vats system is killing the engine because it detects a fault.
Unless I'm misunderstanding you, the starter is engaging... If that's the case, it's not the starter
read up on bypassing VATS, but not the starter relay, that's something else entirely
