Left turn signal coming on with headlights, and always solid
hey, got into an accident last week, been doing all the body work. my left signal was staying solid when i turned it on, replaced the bulbs thinking thats what it was trying to tell me. blinked super slow after that, and now back to solid when i have it on. and just noticed when i have the headlights on, it turns on by itself and stays on. cant even manually hit the signal up and down to make it flash.
i did notice in the blinker housing up front, that one wire that plugs in by itself, next to the main two wires. was having a hard time popping that in. what exactly does that wire do?
sounds like a bad relay to me. what do you guys think?

I don't have an 89, but I had a similar problem like yours. Trace the wire and check for any breaks or cuts to the headlight actuator (the relay). Once I fixed that wire, my problem that you described was gone. Tell me what you find/fix.

Make sure the replacement bulbs are an exact specification-wise match as the originals.
Make sure no 3-contact type bulbs are not installed backwards.
Some wild symptoms have been reported when bulbs are incorrect type or installed wrong.
It does sound like however, you have an open ground.
Use an ohmmeter to probe all associated ground wires.
Your most likely culprit is the ground wire from the left turn bulb.

I just learned that your year doesn't have an isolation relay for the headlights; only two wires. Thus, check and trace the wiring for any open or grounds.

i had two wires for the light, and one that just kind of plugged in. i fiddled with that plug in black one, and it went. so weird. it would make sense if it was trying to tell me a bulb was out, but it staying on when i had the headlights on was just weird. threw me off. so i guess it was that weird 3rd wire not in right.
