'88 IROC Sporadic/Nonfunctioning gauges

Hi Guys,

My stock dash gauges really have me scratching my head; only the tachometer is working consistently and the oil pressure gauge intermittently. My coolant temperature is dramatically bouncing as though it has a poor connection. Even my speedo (although this is a mechanical connection IIRC) is completely not functioning.

I have checked (with a test light) all my fuses and they seem fine. I reconnected the speedo cable after I recently dropped the transmission (to solve an unrelated issue). I didn't see anything too complicated (just a square tipped wire fitting into a square hole).

Where can I find information on the location of the coolant temperature sensor and other gauge related sensors? I saw no such thing in my manual. Should I replace it or is it more likely an issue in the routing?

I don't have allot of experience trouble shooting wiring, I hear allot of people talking about "breaking out the multi meter". I have one, but I don't understand how to use it to track down the issue, or where to find normal current, voltage or resistance levels of components.

Any help is appreciated
