Re: speed buffer
On TPI cars the speed buffer is built into the ecm so those cars didn't have it. But on TBI cars the speed buffer was a unit by itself.
Electronic speedos was powered buy a vehicle speed sensor located in the transmission. This signal is sent to the speed buffer which then amplifies the signal and distributes it to three places. One being the ecm for engine management, second is the cruise control, and third is the gauge on the dash. It is not common for these to go bad since there is no moving parts (which I believe to be true). The issue that I have is that my ecm is getting correct speed signals based on my aldl laptop software as I drive. however the speedo is showing the incorrect speed. As a result, I believe the buffer is not doing its' job to amplify the signal correctly.

Re: speed buffer
"John in RI" has one that he is selling me. He has asked a fair price. I am going to try and get a new one from GM if possible I think I seen on this forum there GM has one new for $30.00. If this is the case I would rather spend $10.00 more and get a new one. But the I that posting was older and GM may not have it any longer so I probably will just get the one from John. Please pm me the info, cost, etc.. so I can have you as a fall back from john in rI
