Two things, first off the caprice 350 probably makes around 230-240 HP, but really you should just call/e-mail them to find out for sure.
My second thing is the second motor, which you claim seems to be "a bit overpriced" is the exact same price as the other motor, it's actually cheaper than the first motor until you figure in the $100 core charge... Plus that motor tells you exactly how much HP it makes. However it might not work with your car because it's got a 2 piece rear seal, or flex plate, or some part like that. (I've seen that mentioned before in the forums.)
What's wrong with rebuilding the motor from the '89 Trans Am? (assuming it's a 350)

no matter what the rear main seal is it will work, and just take the flexplate off your 305 and put it on the 350, thats what i did when i put in my 355, works just fine, no problems

If you are planning on using the 2.8 5 speed, it wont bolt up to a V8 pattern.
You will need a V8 5 speed bellhousing.
If I read this wrong, sorry.

Car: 82 Ponitac Firebird
Engine: 350 TPI
Transmission: 4L60e/TCI TCU
Axle/Gears: 2.73
I have the second engine in my 82 Firebird. It bolted up to the orginal transmission with no problems. It has TPI, SLP exhaust, K&N, and MSD prerformace add-ons. Other then maintenance(tune-ups, oil changes etc) I have only had to replace the EGR valve in 5 years. The TPI intake, ECU, wiring harness, sensors was purchased as a kit from Fual Injection Specielists out of TX.
I currently have 55,000 miles on the engine and its very strong.
I currently can't drive the car because a person driving a mini-van ran a stop sign and smash into the front right wheel area of my 82 Bird. All of the parts has been ordered for the rebuild and the car should go into the shop towards the end of this week.
Unfortunely since the car is 21 years old I am going to have a hard fight on my hands to get a decent settlement out of the other persons insurance.
I have told by my insurance company that once the car is fixed that I can declare a fix value on the car to protect myself. While the car is on the frame machine I am having SFCs install and the suspension will be totally overhalled. I am also putting on new 16 inch AT wheels and 245/50VR-16 BFGoodrich Comp T/A VR4 tires. Including the wheel and tires, the estmated cost of the repair is running somewhere around 10grand (just about what I paid new).
I could easily go out and buy any car out there that I want. But I like my Firebird. It has plenty of space for my 6ft 2inch frame, and is a joy to drive everday. It also does not have any of junk that current cars come with. It is a great performace machine. The combination of space, handling, ride quality, styling and performance can not be touched.

Well, that first motor was used by a user name, RickTPI. Look him up. He swapped the heads i believe and is now running the Holley StealthRam. Also a different cam too i think. He has a web site with all of the info. He is running very low 13s. Whats wrong with the auto out of the V8? I would use that instead of the t5. Its stronger and with the power of the motor you can run it all day. At least get the t5 looked at before slapping it in there. Don't forget about suspension work to from doing a V6 to V8 swap. Do a search on those type of swaps, you'll find exactly what you will need.

i remember pace performance was selling a 350 tbi engine for ~ $1500 or so. they stated that you could pull the factory cam, drop in an LT4 cam, and make around 300 horse. but i've forgotten the part number, and pace doesn't list it on their site.
another thing too, try checking right from gm if you have the part number for the engine. go to www.gmpartsdirect.com
i was pricing a new set of zq8 wheels from pace. they wanted $599 for a set of four. and i don't recall if that included shipping or not. and it also doesn't include the sales tax.
i priced the same rims from gmpartsdirect, and could have them shipped to a local business for $525.

Caprice crate motor
I replaced my tired 305 with the 12513151.
I bought mine for $1500 before the price increase last March.
I also went to the 350 injectors and stuck in a Crane 2020 cam.
Am very happy with this combination and run consistant 14.40-14.50 times with 2.07 60 ft.. With good track conditions i can get 2.02 60 ft.
This engine has an extra threaded hole in the pan which was used for a low oil indicator on some Roadmasters. I think the plug thread size is 20x1.5.
If any questions, just shoot me an e-mail.
