You are trying to pull through the stock pump with a mechanical carb pump?
That can cause some problems. You should yank the pump out of the tank and use a pickup tube designed for a carb.

i went to a carb'd motor from the stock 305 tbi, and all i did was cut the power wire for the fuel pump inside the tank. the wires should be sticking out on the front side of the fuel tank. I use the mechanical fuel pump and everythings works lovely.

i would use the in tank pump and run a fuel pressure reg (w/ a return). i dont think it is smart to pull fuel threw a electric pump from a mech pump.

There seems to be two kinds of people out there that have tried pulling fuel through an inoperative in-tank electric pump - those who don't have any problem with it, and those who do.
If yours worked, consider yourself blessed. Everyone else either has to get the pump operating or pull it out.
If you opt to pull it out, there's a sticky at the top of the Carburetor forum about converting your in-tank electric pump pick-up to a straight pick-up.
