Inexpesisive heads for 383???

I will soon be starting a 383 carb build. I need to find some heads that will fit into my budget(looking to drop about $300 at a time for parts). I was looking into the DART pro 1 200cc 72cc heads. Is there an inexpensive alternative to something like this? Any other head suggestions?

Never mind. found something. how do I delete this? can someone delete this?

Re: Inexpesisive heads for 383???

Vortec heads are what I have on my 383.roughly $600 for the pair and thats for brane new heads.they do require a Vortech specific intake, but I am very happy with my setup.my induction is carbed just as you are planning.my 383 is mild imo 363 hp and 424 ft lbs of torq whic is def enough for me to have fun with.

Vortecs are a great deal for someone on a budget, but if you do decide to spend much more, I would look into the patriot heads, I ran them with good results, and the price was right, if I was going to spend any more than the price of the Patriots, I would buy AFRs.

Re: Inexpesisive heads for 383???

Vortecs. Especially if you haven't bought an intake manifold yet, as they will require a unique intake. Can get a properly modified set of Vortecs for between $500-700. They are probably the best budget hi-perf heads there are.

Also, World Sportsman 200cc heads have been getting REALLY cheap lately, and they are a pretty decent head as well. I bought a set about 2 years ago, completely rebuilt (shaved .007 for flatness, valve job, new valves, springs, retainers, ARP studs and guideplates, mild port work) for not alot more than basically the cost of the rebuild itself. I paid about $500 for a "brand new" set. The biggest benefit to these heads over the Vortecs, is that they use a traditional SBC intake and valvetrain, and the 200cc intake ports will be nice on a big small block like a 383. Lots of room to grow, and they respond well to porting.

Re: Inexpesisive heads for 383???

yeah. those do look more inexpensive, but where did you purchase them for around $500? Some where on the web or local? Did you buy them rebuilt or have it done? That is more of what I am looking for compared to the vortec. Thanks Air.

Re: Inexpesisive heads for 383???

If you do decide to use world sportsman heads, you might call THE ENGINE SHOP, they sometimes have cosmetic blem heads for a substantial savings.

The sportsman heads are a great head, but vortecs are sometimes a better head for a low rpm street engine. What is it you plan to build exactly?

Re: Inexpesisive heads for 383???

My plans to build. I want this to be street and strip. I plan to pick up a used 350 and have it hot tanked and bored out. Cam shaft will depend on what heads I decide on going with. Decent pair of headers. Edlebrock intake, haven't decided on which one but maybe preformer. Holley double pump carb. Basic stuff like chrome or polished pan and covers blah blah blah. I want to be looking somewhere at 350-400 horse and close to 12's on quarter mile. I already have nitrous set up in the bird right now but not sure if I'm going to run it through this new engine right away. I don't really care how it will be on gas. Those are my plans in a nutshell

The GM Fast Burn heads don't quite meet your specs for intake and chamber volume, 210 & 62cc respectively, but they are Vortec-style and work pretty well out of the box. About $200 less for a pair than the Pro 1's.

Depending upon the intake you get, you might want to consider a Performer RPM, which is available in the Vortec style.

I got my set locally... they had been used for a long time, but then were rebuilt and hadn't been reused since (guy had a 350 in his Nova, but changed to a 427 big block before the heads went back on).

Look for them used, you can find really fantastic deals on them. I like them because, even though they aren't as "modern" of a design as the Vortecs or AFRs, they are still a very good head, and they are a VERY durable, thick casting head too. I'm sure my World heads weigh probably 10lbs or more each over the weight of the 601 heads I removed, and those are a GM truck 'HD' head, so its not one of the lightweight castings like the 882.

I really like my World heads. These and Vortecs are by far the best 'bang for the buck' deal for SBC cylinder heads.

If you are looking for a set of Sportsman II, I wil be selling mine soon as I get a chance to take them off my motor. They were checked for cracks, flat milled and new springs installed on them this past summer and only have about 10 or less passes on them at the track. PM me if interested.
