305 rebuild

i am going to do a rebuild of my 305. but i want to add "stuff" to the motor to get the engine pushing at least 200HP compared to the stock 160HP. what can i do to modify the motor? im not too knowledgeable when it comes to engine work on domestics.

Re: 305 rebuild

Do a search.....

Why not get a 350? A 350 can be had pretty cheap, slap on a full exhaust, cam, high flow heads and you will be over well over 200HP.

a 350 is too expensive for my budget, my friends taking out the engine so rebuilding it at the shop will be real cheap $300.

Re: 305 rebuild

Convert it to a roller setup and a set of vortec heads should help it...

That's sounds way low for a rebuild.

Re: 305 rebuild

If you're carburated, a good cam like the Extremes from Comp and a Performer RPM or Z28 style high rise along with good exhaust and gears will really wake that car up. mine ran mid/high 14s with no off the line traction @ 96 miles per hour with only mods like listed above and some good tuning. Heads will help a lot, but the $$ will add up fast.

That's a very good question.

If by "rebuild" you mean "adding stuff", then you can do this without pulling the engine. I.E., cam and valve springs will get you to 200 HP.

But...

That's assuming the exhaust is up to the task. And, stock LG4 exhaust is not up to the task. The bad news is $300 will not cover what you need to do to the exhaust to get it up to the task.

a 383 stroker kit is only for a 350. NOT a 305.

Not only that, if u did have a 350 and wanted to go 383, its going to cost a hell of a lot more than $300.

Re: 305 rebuild

You should add a cam with lifts and valve spring to hold the new lift and that should help you get closer to you h.p. goal. There are even cams that work with computer control set up in case you have that set up
