HELP! How to tell LB9 from L98
Ok, I promise I googled this before asking but how on earth are you supposed to tell a L98 from a LB9? All the exterior components are absolutly identical. I tryed to google the casting numbers but I came up with about 11 different results! Some sites say its 14011148 other sites say it's either 14088548 or 14101148.
What I'm looking at is supposedly a 88 roller cam L98. I need to know the casting numbers for the heads and the block because its outside the car!

They are stamped 5.0 or 5.7 on the back of the motor above the bellhousing, drivers side.
'86 and newer will have an alum housing on the rear of the crank for the one piece rear main seal. '86's are oddballs with hyd flat tappet cam's and id'd by the fact that all the intake bolts will be at the same angle.
'87 and newer were roller cam'd and the middle 2 intake bolts were revised and point straight up to make them easier to get to. And will also have center bolt valve covers.

Re: HELP! How to tell LB9 from L98
Early 2 pce RMS engine will have the casting number where shown in the pic below
Late 1 pce RMS (roller cam ) engine will have 5.0 or 5.7 there and the casting number in same position on opposite side
Pic also shows the alum housing on the crank for 1pce RMS engines mentioned above
Let us know what the casting # is

Re: HELP! How to tell LB9 from L98
I didn't see any casting # there (on the back behind the left or right cylinder head) but I was able to find the casting number for the head which was 14101083, which at least means it has at least one 350 head on it.
He had obviously just pulled it out of his camaro, which had the correct vin. The eighth digit was a 8 instead of an F.
Idk, I'm just really hesitant. LB9s are worthless.
I'll double check for the vin when I go to pick it up tomarrow

Re: HELP! How to tell LB9 from L98
LB9s aren't so worthless when they are hooked up to a 5 speed or when they can just be switched to a 350 block but use the existing TPI plenum.
remember if the 8th Digit is 8 then it's a 5.7 if its an F then its 5.0 and 14101083 is a casting number for '87 and up 350 64cc heads
