Header interchangeability - y pipe

Hi,
I'm planning a top-end rebuild on my 305 soon. I have all the parts ready, I just have to start wrenching.
I'd like to get a set of headers for the car, and I know which types I'm considering.
BUT, I only really have the money for an uncoated set of flowtech's (1 1/2" primaries), and a Hooker y-pipe.
Someday, I'll be going to a 350, and at that time I'd like to go to a 1 5/8" coated header. Will I still be able to use the same y-pipe, if I use another shorty design?
Will I be able to use the little Flowtech headers with the Hooker y-pipe?

I just called holley and they won't sell me thier y-pipe. Tas was able to do so after he bent his but I could not convince anyone to sell me one. Anyways, I ordered a set a coated flowtechs that come with a y-pipe and an O2 bung for like $395. That is a pretty good deal if you ask me. Anyways flowtech makes a y-pipe for that header. The header is 11102 and the y-pipe is 11102y.

In jegs headers are 387-11102 and y-pipe is 387-11102y. $200 total for both. Not bad.

I'm not concerned with smog, as I know of a place that will pass me.

davehamilton - That's a good question. The reason that I didn't want to buy the 1 5/8" headers right now, is because I don't have the money to coat them, and I'd hate to rot them just for my 305. The 1 1/2" are a little cheaper, and I'll basically treat these headers as throw-aways (don't have to spend them money getting them coated), as I won't put them on my 350.

Which brings me to my next question, can you take USED headers, and get them coated? If I sprung for the 1 5/8" headers right now, and left them uncoated on the 305 (with some hi-temp paint), would I be able to get them coated a few years down the line?

I will take a look at those part #', ShiftyCapone, thanks.

You can get used headers coated. Take a look at www.jet-hot.com and they have a pic right on the front page of a rusty header and then a treated one. They have to sandblast all headers anyways so it doesn't matter if they have rust on them.

Alright then. It sounds like I should just spend the money now, and buy the 1 5/8" headers, seeing as I can get them coated later.
Thanks!

get a couple cans of VHT flameproof 1500* paint and strip the shipping paint and spray down with the VHT. it works pretty good and should prevent rust for a while. what brand of headers are you considereing buying? also if your headers is extremely rusted when you give it to jethot or whoever then they can still coat it but the coating may have some pot holes in it(not perfectly smooth). like i said though the paint should prevent it for awhile.

smashed Y pipe update:
when it rains it pours. The exaust guy said for him to make a Y it would be like $150. Hooker wants $160. I think I'm just gonna put the stock crap back and sell what's left of the headers and 3" cat.

I will do that.

I'm undecided as to whether I should get the Hedman or Hooker setups.
Does either one have a y-pipe that is 3"?
Why did you pick the Hedman one, Brody?

Tas, are you selling your Hooker headers? If so, which part # are they, and what's your asking price?

I still have to talk to my dad about what we should do, but the headers are the 50 state legal Hooker 2055 with air tubes. You can get the $160 Y pipe to go with it if you tell Hooker the story I did (I had it all on and it got smashed). They will only sell it if you get from them dirtectly, not from a summit or jegs or one of our good sponors (sponsors= ). Since they cost $360 new I'd have to sell them for under $200. If anyone wants to be kept apprised of the ongoing situation shoot me an email (NT gets first dibs of course ) I think I'd be selling these things too:3" cat, weiand 7547 intake.

i found them used for a good price. then i had my dad bead blast them ($0) and i painted them with the VHT paint and kinda baked them on with a oxy acetylene heating tip. i opened up the ports in the collector(pic). after that i took a sawzall to the single 2.5" pipe and cut it off. i had the muffler shop bend and weld 3" there(sorry no pic, maybe next time the car is up in the air). they gotta flow pretty good now, but in stock form they need some work, the porting can be done with a dremel or with a die grinder like what i used. the single 2.5" pipe can easily be cut off and 3" bent and welded but you will probably have to have a exhaust shop do that, i think i paid $30 for that to be done( i was having the whole system put on at the time and he may have cut me a break)

I sent Tas a PM respectfully declining his offer for the headers, because they're not quite the part I was looking for.
If anybody else needs them, feel free to shoot him an offer!

Brody, thanks a lot for the pics. That sounds like a good way to get a 3" y-pipe, and save a little $$$.
I will try that.
Thanks a lot, guys!
