Replacement muffler? Hooker, Flowmaster? what?

Going to be getting rid of this crappy 80 series flowmaster very soon. Just need opinions on a muffler to get now.

I don't want it to be real loud, has to sound good, but also perform well. Doesn't have to be dual outlet either. Will a single 50 series flowmaster work? Hooker? Borla? I'm not sure.

If you dont want real loud, and kinda quite until WOT, go with Hooker

I'm going with Hooker. If you want to hear a contrast between WOT and part throttle, click on Mark's "Hooker CatBack sound clip with old mods". He nails it through the first couple of gears, then just cruises through the next couple. Comparing that with a couple of FlowMaster clips (not that there's anything wrong with FlowMaster, just personal taste) helped me decide.

I was looking at the two chamber flowmasters, but I wanna keep the dual tail pipes in the back. So Hooker it is

I've looked around, but I'm not really sure what Hooker muffler that I need?

I hear the Dynomax isn't too loud. I'm ordering mine this week, so then we'll see.

flowmaster

i would stick with the flowmaster........and if they are so called "flowblockers" then obviously you have taken a look under drag cars that require mufflers....if you don't see a dynomax race muffler you see a flowmaster most of the time......i went to the fastest streetcar shootout in columbus and 9 out of 10 cars ran flowmasters of some sorts (the guy that one this year was running low 8's at 170+mph with yes....you guessed it....flowmaster mufflers)....so put that in your crack pipe and smoke it lol. :hail:

Which file did you listen to? The hooker 350 is with my old mods, and the cam really woke the sound up at idle. But the mic is hanging out the hatch with both files.

They're really quiet at idle, but when you get on it they scream.

What don't you like about the 80 Series?!

Maybe I got a bad one. But right in the 1500-2000 rpm range it sounds like a golf ball rattling around inside. It's very loud inside the car and quite noticable outside. I can't stand it. I know the muffler flows well, but that sound is waaaaaay too much.

edit: Oh yeah, what's the Hooker muffler with single 3" in and two outs, I can't find it anywhere?

thats because most people stick them on a pretty well "stock vehicle.....a weak @$$ cam in a weak @$$ motor will make for a weak @$$ exhaust note

i'd have to throw up a big on that one.......i went faster in the 1/4 with ONLY changing from a dynomax super turbo to an 80 series flowmaster.....weather was the same, same tires, good traction when i had the dynomax but i spun a little with the flowmaster. that, i would have to believe, would mean i had an increase in power. so much for the "Super Turbos outflow flowmaster theory".

keep in mind that opinions are like a-holes, everyone has one. It is all a matter of personal preferrence. One guy might like the sound & looks of the hooker & one guy might like the sound & looks of the flowmaster. I opted for the Flowmaster system because I did not like the tips on the hooker system (2 tips on each side). As far as one system outflowing the other, I dont think that it would make that much difference unless you are trying to squeeze every bit of HP out of your engine and trying to break the land speed record.

The super turbo uses through pipe stile with a mandrel bended S type from the inside Flowmaster uses chambered stile so how come it flows better

You went faster, or you went quicker? There's a big diff there.

I believe that you will gain a little more flow from a Flowmaster simply because the Super Turbo is not available in a 3" inlet. It's 2 1/2" in/ two 2 1/2" out. The Flowmaster is 3" in/ two 2 1/2" out. That can make a big difference IF, and only if, you are running the 3" pipe with the Flowmaster. If you slap a 3" Flowmaster on a 2 1/2" pipe, I boubt that you'd gain but .05 of a second. But that's just my theory.

The "Super Turbo outflows Flowmaster" may be true if you're comparing a standard Super Turbo (3" in/3" out) against a 3 chamber Flowmaster with the same in/out size. But with the crossflow design, let's just face it, it don't flow worth a crap. WAY too many bends and interchanges, plus a reverse of direction, to flow very well.

Just get a Flowmaster, Dynomax, or Hooker 1in/1out muffler if you want the best flow at lower dBs. That's what the Stage 2 exhaust that comes on the 2002 Camaro SS from SLP is. They did that for a reason.

Because Flowmaster flows better.

Really, if you've got power, nothing sounds like Flowmaster, and even sometimes when you don't they still sound nice.

BOTH....et was lower and mph was faster. it wasn't by a whole lot but i did run quicker and faster. as far as the size difference.....i went from a 2.5" dynomax super turbo x-flow to a 2.5" 80series. they make 2 sizes in the 80series. i was also using a 2.5" mandrel bent intermediate pipe with both mufflers

not that it is really relevant to me anymore because i now have dual exhaust with two 2chamber flowmaster 40 series.

i didn't mean to get anyone's panties in a bunch. i was just making my piece sharing my experience of proving wrong, the claim that dynomax makes of producing more power and torque than flowmaster. i personly liked the sound of the dynomax. it was not until i heard some of my friends race/street cars that ran duals with 40 series that made me fall in love with the flowmaster sound. and i also agree that the 80 series sounds like crap on a basically stock vehicle. i believe they were designed to work with big cams that are really on the hot side with more durration. it all comes down to whatever makes you happiest. i like the sound of just about every cat-back made for f-body's with the exception of borla. so go with what you like and can afford. sorry for any raise in blood pressure i have caused or grey hairs i have produced lol
