cut out question. anybody who has one or knows about them

i have flow tech headers and y pipe and i have my cat replaced by a strait pipe but i want to put a cut out where the cat was. is that a good place? i am also going to get one that has the cable because i cant afford an electric one. are these very good? very reliable? does anybody know what size the flowtech y pipe is? i think its like 2 1/4 or 2 1/2, somewhere around there so what size do i need for a cut out? i dont think it will be too hard to install but i will be using a stick welder because thats all i have. will that do? im pretty clueless about these cut outs because no one aroudn here has them. thanks alot for any information you can give me

i have mine in the I pipe right before it goes over the axel. if needed i can take pics of it.

as for the cable one? spend the 35 bucks and just buy a wing nut one. then later on pop for the motor. i run mine open everyday but i have stock manifolds and dual cats so its not too loud. ill be getting hedman shorties in this week along with a carsound cat so it might make it a bit louder but not too bad.

i found a cable type cutout in jc whitney and it sais it fits up to 2 1/4 inch pipe. woudl this work? its only 22$ so this would be great if it would fit. i figured i woudl run the cord up to where my ash trey is or under the dash by the console. it comes with 5 ft of cord. but im not sure how well the cord ones work. i have heard great things about the electric ones but nothing about the cords. should i order it? i plan on ordering one by satyrday. thanks.

dont get the cable operated ones. every one ive seen so far hasnt worked. some ive seen rust open or closed and then you are kinda SOL. just get the wingnut style from thunder racing (www.thunderracing.com) and screw on 3 nuts when you want to be quiet.

if you get the kind with a plate and 3 wing nuts, you can later on add a electric cutout valve....

cna't say I've had experience with the "cable" type, but my uncle had 2 of them on his 68 Chevelle and they leaked pretty bad. Could barely even drive it because the smell got in the car.....

do NOT go with that cable one from JC Whitney. i had one and they don't seal (open or closed), it rusted really quick, and the cable thing never did work. i'd have to agree that you should go with a wing nut one and later get an electric doohickey for it.

I would just get a regular cutout (weld in) 3 bolt up flange type. You could probably take it to a welding shop or muffler shop and see if they will weld the cut out in for you.

I would just mess around with a regular cutout for awhile, just make sure the pipe is cool before you mess with the wing nuts. If you decide you like it buy an electric cutout. They will bolt right up on the end of 3 bolt flange usually.

You can get them from McCord or QTEC. They're both pretty much the same. You'll find stories about both of them going bad, but I think McCord has the better warrenty if I remember correctly.

McCord's Website

QTEC's Website

really though, i have yet to hear a valid story about either going bad, and the ones that have, went bad because of user stupidity.

btw, if you cant swing that price now, like fireturd350 said... get a $30 regular "manual" cutout for awhile, then later when you have more money, get the electric part and slip it on the cutout

I have the Mccord cut out. It looks good. I haven't got it installed yet cause I'm upgrading to some Hooker long tube 1 3/4" coated headers soon so I'll have to make the exhaust for that.

Usually Mccord is decent at doing group purchases. You might look into that. That's how I got mine. I think it was around 95 bucks shipped... course it's been what like a year or more since we did that on here.
