Exhaust Sound Clip

Ok guys, its not the best sound clip in the world, i need someone to host it its 37 seconds long and 74KB in size. An email address to the hoster would be great.

Although it is a sound clip, it doesn't do the exhaust justice, i had to record it with a tape recorder then plub the headphone output into the computer and record it that way. But it still is a sound clip.

this one?

I can bet it doesn't sound much better than a v6 with open exhaust.
Unless of course you like the **** beater, raggedy old 1976, 305 farm truck that the exhaust fell off 3 years ago sound... then... I'm sure it sounds sweet as hell.

As long as you like it though.. doesn't really matter what the hell I have to say about it.

The clipping on that recording is so bad it's hard to tell what it sounds like.

doh!...

Ok, since everyone is too busy flaming on the sound, i'll be the first to do otherwise.

Shane- It's obviously not the best sound. I think what you need to do is two things:

1.) record the sound from about 5-6 feet away from the car(place the recorder on the ground maybe).
&
2.) begin the clip without the car not started yet, then slowly rev to 4000 RPM, let it fall back down all the way to idle, then gun it for a few seconds.

Hopefully this helps in future sound clips.
-G

P.S- if ya got some sound editing software, see if you can reduce some of the "noise" or graininess of the sound.

I now know what not to do with my 305. Sorry but sounds like crap. Everyone said it would get annoying after a while and that the idle would not sound better. Oh well...you can lead a horse to the trough but you can't make them drink...

With that tinny noise in the backhround and the dronning at idle, it sort of sounds like driving down the highway in my old beat up maxima. Seriously, though, put a muffler on it to help tone it down and impove the exaust note.

You're just realizing it's loud.

i want it llouder at idle thats what i was shooting for and i didn't get it. How do i?
You can't have your cake and eat it too.. or so the saying goes.
To have the loud, ballsy idle.. you obviously have to have the motor to be making that noise (and a stock 305 or even 350 isn't quite going to do that). At the same time, you can't have loud idle and tame rpm band tone. The louder the idle, the louder the rest of it's going to be. More power (air moving in/out the motor), the more noise... just the nature of the beast...

ummm... thats usually not the main reason you put in a cam. How high is your idle? It sounds a bit high in the clip. If you do mod the motor and dont tune it to compensate for the changes, it will lope and have a choppy idle, but not for the right reasons.

Before I set things up right I used to get: "Hey, thats got pretty choppy idle. Which cam did you use?"

Me: "... no hot cam or anything, it jsut runs like **** because I didnt do anything about its state of tune. Sounds cool, though..."

i had just started it almost cold, it had been sitting for a few hours while i washed it. It usually idles at like 1100-1200 until its been runinng for 5 minutes then goes down to 650-850.

LOL, last summer my car was F-ed up and didn't know y. turned out to be my EVAP canister was filled with liquid gas instead of the vapor gas that should be running thru it.....but EVERYBODY thought i had a cam o well

Shane, do u have a digi camera? it might be able to take vids, might wana check it out. if not, u def need to find a better sound recording and let it warm up too. i know what it should sound like (i did the same thing when i got my headers AND i loved it) but wait til u hit WOT and it hits 4500...raspy that's y i put a glasspack on...made it sound 10xs better, i'll try and get a clip this weekend.

Yes an no.
Yes, as in technically, an upgrade in cam will make more power thus a little more noise (across the board).
No, as in, it's still a 305 with the red-headed step child sized cylinders and small exhaust valves.
Audibly, you probably wouldn't even know the difference in loudness with the exception of idle smoothness, maybe.

If I might ask... why the obsession with a loud idle ? (and I don't ask just to further harass you about the sound of your 305)

Toss up another vote for sounds...not-so-good. Sounding loud and sounding good are 2 completely different things. It sounds as if you are heading in the direction of the far more annoying first choice.

you want volume huh? Toss in a solid roller cam. Give it about .600" or so for the valve lift. About 300° +/- seat to seat duration with roughly 260° @ .050" duration for both the intake and exhaust. Use a 108-110 LSA. That will make some noise.

Meanwhile he will throw tons of money at an engine that he's not planning to keep to achieve a sound that makes his car sound like it has some nuts...but why not get in the mindset of making your car perform better and run faster. All you seem to be doing is what every r i c e r out there is doing. Modding your car to sound faster then it really is. Oh well...guess I just am missing something

i want it to sound tuff not fast. Theres a difference but it may be small.

And i am buying an MSD ignition box form a d00d in the local car club, so that'll be good. Then i'm doing fuel system upgradess and a bunch of stuff to go with it, hoping for a 30HP increase.

Then when i get that 350 machined i want to exchange the 355 crank for a 383 crank. That way it'll make some noise.

Get some APC stickers while your at it... It looks good to me, but the sound is something to be desired. Maybe one of those Dynomax (?) Race mufflers inline would help it tone down and deeper...

*Shakes head* If you want to be loud why not just buy a catback with an 80 series stock style muffler on it and be done with it. I have a 40 series. Sounds like the stock exaust note but only louder with lots of low frequencies, not like crap like the open exaust does or the bullet muffler will. People do performance upgrades to improve performance, not sound.... Any upgrades wont make much difference to the power output of your present motor, with the exception of an improved exaust. Theres no need for any ignition stuff. The stock ignition is jsut fine for a stock motor. Leave the car be...

EDIT: oops... saw you already have a cat back. Put the muffler back on. In my honest opinion, it doesnt sound good with out any sort of muffler on it.

What is the "other stuff" because there is no way in hell you will get 30 hp from a fuel system and ignition alone.

werd.

Not to flame... but it is one I guess..., why would you want a "tough " sounding car vs. one that is actually fast... and not stock with an exhaust.

Hell, I have full aftermarket ignition, exhaust, etc. and I still consider my car stock. When you get heads, a cam, or whatever... then it's no longer a noisy stock 3rd gen!

I dont care for the noise it made when you revved it up high but I cant really say because that clip isnt really worth listening. Whys everyone flaming him?? Theres plenty of other people on this board that do things that everyone else doesnt like. Unless you live next door to him and get annoyed by the sound of his car quit being a bunch of asses.

I wouldnt say people are flamming him. With the exception of br()berts comment (thats a bit over the line) most of the comments are constructive criticism or opinions. IMO, it doesnt sound good. If it floates his boat then im cool with that. Just my

Sounds horrible to me. Strangely enough it sounds almost exactly like the old raggity air conditioning unit in the basement of my job.

PLEASE do every living thing with ears a favor, regardless of how wonderful you think it sounds, IT DOESNT! It sounds awful and I gauruntee everyone you pass by with a respectable car points and laughs. Save yourself some embarrassment before its too late. Put a real exhaust system on and make your car loud by adding horsepower, not subtracting exhaust! PLEEEEAAAASSEEEE!
