exhaust manifold bolts loosen up...

i've got a chevy 350 w/ headers and the bolts holding the header on loosen up causing exhaust leaks. I've heard the recommendation is to put lock-tight on the bolts, but I saw there was many different strengths of lock-tight. I want the bolts to stay in but wanna be able to get them off at some point.

Loctite isn't going to do much good in that kind of heat. Locking header bolts or lock wire would be best.

What I did, was order a set of header bolts drilled for safety wire. Basically, the bolt heads have small holes drilled through them so you can feed some tie wire through, to basically tie the bolt in place. It works very well.

The bolts were about $35 cdn for a set of 12. I dunno how much that is in US currency.

You could drill them yourself with a drill press too.

You may want to look into a locking header bolt. The breslins are a great product and don't use locking tabs like the Stage 8's do.

i've actually never heard of a lockwire or safety wire solution to the problem. is it possible for a more in-depth explanation on how that works?

Look at how the bolts on the side-cover on this trans are 'tied up' with safety wire. The heads of the bolts are drilled, so wire can pass through. This is on a trans, like I said, but you do exactly the same with header bolts. Works great, and if you wanna take the bolts out, just snip the wire. Easy.
