Magnaflow 16829 Hanger???

I just bought the magnaflow 16829 catback system, and it doesnt seem like the exhaust hangers that i have on the car already are going to work. I dont know what type of hangers to use since im not really familiar with exhaust parts. What have others used with their magnaflow catback systems?

Re: Magnaflow 16829 Hanger???

the magnaflow system is great, but i also found that it wasnt truly "bolt on". It wasnt hard to modify the stock hangers. they just needed to be shortened a little and bent to the proper angle. like any exhaust sytem, it does take some manipulation to get it right. Remember, there are many different ways the multiple angles can align, so you ahve to play with it. getting it up as high as possible helps. im sure its easier on a lift.
Ill post a pic of my hangers tommorrow.
just a note: most of the pics ive seen of peoples magnaflow system, the pipes are too low or uneven. put some effort into it and they can be better.

im not afraid of a litle fabricateing (and i do have a lift at home). my big gripe is for the money this kit costs and it is listed as bolt in, i wouldnt think i would have to be makin trips to the store to get parts to make it work (hangers, nuts and bolts etc.) if i needed extra stuff to make it work i would have gotten it ahead of time. and i decided to do this on a sat evening and so now im stuck not being able to finish to the dealer/parts store opens. i dont know if its because mine had the factory dual mufflers with two pipes going over the axle that may make my hangers diff or what.

and i had planned on doing my wifes brakes on her truck this weekend so since this cars sitting on the lift i have to wait for another day to do hers. and i know someone may say just jack it up in the drive way (and my air will reach) but once you get a lift, you dont jack nothing up ever again. when i do brakes or something i sit in a nice office chair and roll bakc and forth between what im working on and my box, i only get up to get a beer.

Re: Magnaflow 16829 Hanger???

LOL! I wouldnt touch a jack if i had a lift!!
Factory duel mufflers? I didnt think there was such a thing. Sounds to me like your issue is that it doesnt have the original exhaust. Mine didnt either, it was straight piped all the way through. Ill go get a pic of my hangers in a minute

Re: Magnaflow 16829 Hanger???

no its factory exhaust. i went to the dealer today and ordered the correct hanger. after looking at different pictures on the dealer computer. it is a 4th gen hanger that is needed. when iget it wed morning i post a pic showing the difference. the thing is the 3rd gen hanger attaches to the tail pipe on the left and right. where as the 4th gen ataches to the main pipe going into the muffler and the driver side attaches to the tailpipe.

that differenc does two things. 1 it changes the angle of the bracket and 2 it moves the bracket further back on a 4th gen. so even if you could get the 3rd gen bracket to reach it would put the muffler to far rearward and force the whole muffler lower down as well as make the main pipe hit the panhard brace or the frame above the brace. anyhow i will post some pics of what is wrong and what will work.

and ruberman i didnt mean to hijack your thread so i will start a new one when i post all the pics. sorry.

On my '90 there is one factory hanger on the pipe entering the muffler (passenger side) and one on the drivers' side tail pipe. Will have the exhaust shop cut off the factory bracket on the passenger side so I can use it with the Magnaflow bracket to tie into the factory hanger.

Yes this Magnaflow catback isn't quite a bolt on at least not for my 5.7l with the factory dual cats. The instructions say "On the dual converter models bolt the front mid pipe directly to the Y-pipe." The problem is that the back end of the 2.75" factory Y-pipe has a bell mouth that is secured to the front of the factory mid pipe (which also has a bell mouth) with a pivoted clamp that fits over the end of both pipes. I see nothing in the kit that allows connection of the input of the Magnaflow mid/front pipe to the outlet of the factory Y-pipe. Will have to go to an exhaust shop and have them weld a bell mouth to the front of the Magnaflow mid/front pipe so I can connect the cat back to the output of the factory Y-pipe.

Here is what I did for the hanger for the main pipe entering the passenger side of the muffler. Cut the support off the factory pipe, drill a hole in it and bolt the Magnaflow bracket to it.

I also had to get this adapter fabricated to tie the output of the factory Y-pipe to the input of the Magnaflow on my dual-cat car. It uses the factory double-hinged clamp on the input bell mouth and the 2.75" exhaust clamp from the Magnaflow kit on the output.

Re: Magnaflow 16829 Hanger???

I got the car back out of the garage and was under it today. I still need to get the right hanger on the passenger side. What is the part number for the 4th gen hanger?
