Side pipes!

Had been pondering what to do for an exhaust for quite some time, finally decided to go with side pipes. I went with pipes with heat shields and chrome inlet/outlet(or tip if you prefer). I also purchased a set of headman shorty headers, however once I realized that the driver side collector dumps in the stock crossover location I gave myself a swift kick in the ***.

Anyway, here are a few pictures; please excuse the dirty car, parked it under a tree that decided to dump it's load (of sap) all over the car.

Obviously in the first pic I have only positioned the pipe where it is, there are no hangers built in that picture. The second pic shows what I fabricated to go from drivers side header to drivers side pipe, I forgot to take a picture of its passenger side partner before I bolted it in. I lost about an inch and a half of ground clearance with this 2.5" set up.

The engine is a 383, hoping for around 500 horse but you all know what can happen when you speculate. The exhaust sounds quiter than I was expecting, however te carb still needs to be jetted and I'd just been grinding for a while; one of my neighbours came out to inform me that it sounded pretty good and they still heard it loud and clear from their livingroom.

Re: Side pipes!

i guess ill be the first to say it, you wont like them, they sound nice and flow decent but you will start to hate them, you burn your legs on them, they scrape on EVERYTHING, every little incline you will hear them screaming against the pavemnet. you will get fumes and it will get hot around the area they are in. they arent a good idea on these cars.

Re: Side pipes!

Run it out the back like a champ, straight pipe single 3inch will be plenty up to 400hp.

A muffler can make more power than no muffler:

So, what did all this testing uncover? It turns out today's mufflers are all good. If you want to squeeze out every last drop of power, there are a few standouts, so check the captions and dyno sheets for the details. But all the mufflers are so close you really can't go wrong. Just find a pair that sounds good to you and bolt 'em on. Better yet, all the mufflers handily outperformed an open exhaust, so you can tell that annoying guy in the neighborhood with the jacked-up Nova to put on some mufflers and he'll actually be faster.
There is NO advantage to straight pipes if you pick a good muffler.

THIS. I hate my side exit's. I can't go over any kind of bump or ill rip them right off, plus even though they sound nice having the exhaust 2 ft from your ears makes it much louder inside. I get headaches from the noise after driving it for any length of time.
