Which Exhaust Should I Use?

I have a 1989 Camaro, with 3 inch pipe for the cat that downsizes to 2.5 for a crappy muffler I'm not so fond of. My cat has a big a** hole in it (god knows how). I want to redo the exhaust, but what should I use? I'm leaning towards Borla, but as far as I know they don't make cats.

My idea: Magnaflow catalytic converter with a Borla muffler.

Suggestions?

Re: Which Exhaust Should I Use?

are you looking to run a stock style catback system? or are you going to dump the exhaust before the axle

if stock style its all gonna be preference to the sound you want, Borla makes a nice system, Magnaflow makes a nice system, Mac has a nice system, you have plenty of options there

as for the cat just get a high flow magnaflow or equivalent

Re: Which Exhaust Should I Use?

Steer clear of Borla - while quality, it is 2x the price of Magnaflow for the same system. I'm an authorized dealer of both Borla and Magnaflow and have never recommended Borla to anyone so far - Magnaflow is the best bang for the buck in terms of exhaust systems on the market, nit to mention they are stainless steel also.

You want the Magnaflow 93441 converter, a direct replacement for the 3" TPI cat OEM on our cars (correct size, flanges, and air tube). I have that cat, the TPI y-pipe, and the cat back on my L98 GTA and think it is excellent - from the materials to the fit and finish it is a great buy.

You can get the entire Magnaflow system (all 3 pieces) that I have on my car for less than the Borla cat-back and have money to spare!

PM if you are interested, we stock all 3 3rd gen parts in our warehouse and at lower prices than Summit or Jegs.

Re: Which Exhaust Should I Use?

Get a 3in. inlet Magnaflow CAT with a 3in. outlet using a adapter on the "Y" if nessary .Now is the time to find a 3in. mandrel bent CAT back. I would go to "YouTube and punch in 1989 Camaro, then what type of cat back/muffler you want to listen to a few different ones to geta a idea on what sound/volume you prefer.

By the way what paul_huryk said above makes a lot of since about the total Magnaflow system being a good choise but I prefer a louder set up so I went with the Flowmaster American Thunder CAT back.

I ran a 3" magnaflow in my T/A. Nice quiet-ish sound around town and sounded better on the highway.

I currently have a magnaflow cat and the Borla exhaust waiting to go into my 89 IROC.

Re: Which Exhaust Should I Use?

While I've used Magna flow with & w/out cats on previous cars, I'm currently running 3" Flow masters on my 3rd gen . Magna flow was better performance. My car came w/ flowmasters & it is aDD, so I just don't want to mess w/it since it works well/sound is fine w/single chat

Re: Which Exhaust Should I Use?

Just ordered the magnaflow 3" part #16829. Also ordered ceramic coated hooker headers and y pipe. Thinking I'm just going to get a cat delete and make my own flanges. I'm sure a home made cat delete would be the same, right?
