Hello, I have a 87 Iroc 350 t tops 26,000 orig miles.
I want to change the muffler only. car is all stock. Is the inlet in the muffler 3in and 2.5 out the back.
I know Hawks use to sell that bolt on Cat delete pipe , any one know where I could get one of those. Thanks
Agree w/ chazman about the FM. My personal description of the one I had for a few weeks was like a 55 gallon drum on a 10' chain dragging behind the car. It didn't even sound "good" outside the car. It sounded like cold leftover yesterday's BUTT as far as I was concerned. Loud, hollow, blubbery, hilljack, only one step removed from a pickup with a cherry bomb, ... not me at all.
I. COULD. NOT. STAND. IT. I gave it away. I hated it so bad I even felt guilty about trying to get money for it.
Closest you can get to stock is a Walker / Dynomax (same company, 2 brand names). Don't know the PN off the top of my head.
There is absolutely no reason whatsoever to delete the cat. No benefit at all to doing that. On a car with that low of mileage it's a rabbit hole that isn't worth going down.
I've had a FM on my car since the early 90's. I kinda like the sound of it and I never really noticed the drone. Do the newer ones have a different sound? Are they made cheaply? Is it just that I don't know any better?
DO NOT USE FM!!! I have a 92 Formula 350 with Hooker headers and 3" exhaust going into a FM 40 and I HATE THE SOUND!! It sounds almost stock. Go with a magna flow or spintech you will like the Mello deep rumble it gives. Listen on youtube to find what you want.
I had a Flowmaster 80 series. Swapped it for a Magnaflow. Much happier. Magnaflow sounds closer to stock but still aggressive in an 80's way. Flowmaster could get annoyingly noisy.
Lookup my video of a Flowmaster 80 series on YouTube and see for yourself if you like the Flowmaster sound on my Thirdgen. I personally think it sounds great. "dmccain" on you-tube or "dmccain2"
I've had quite a range of mufflers on my thirdgens over the years. The FM 80 wasn't the greatest. It's decent enough if you're just changing the muffler/tips but I wouldn't do it again. The muffler I really enjoyed was my Spintech/Mufflex setup or my SLP LM with a Powerstick chambered muffler. Sounded great on my 383. If you're just looking for some grumble/tone then the Magnaflow is probably for you.

I can understand why so many don’t like it but I have one on my 88 Trans Am that’s been on there since late 90’s. Had it with the SBC and the Pontiac engine now. I truly love the sound of it. Shorty headers on both engines, 3” no cat. If only I knew how to post a video clip lol

Price in many situations is NOT an indication of how much satisfaction you will receive. Mufflers are like women (or men, for some of you out there): what it costs is INNO WAY correlated to how much you'll like or enjoy it.
I HATED my Blowmaster. Buttt, exhausts, and their sounds, is a deeply personal matter. Anybody here can only offer what THEY felt or thought, within THEIR preferences.

I had one on my V-6 and it rotted out so fast as well...now there's one from the PO on my TPI car and it is ridiculously loud and I believe its rotting as well.....you can tell because the sound changes and theres some rattling...I can't wait to replace it.
I have the Magnaflow on mine. It is about 15 years old, sounds great. Louder than when it was new. Not too bad just going down the road but at WOT is is loud AF. After all, at WOT don't we want loud AF?
if the car is all stock, and you want to keep it stock, just get a Walker brand. Its just OEM replacement.
As far as aftermarket tho...i had a FM for about 10 years before i got rid of it for rotting (and bursting from backfiring after my fuel pump went). I have a Dynomax on my truck and so far i like it. It has been on for a few years now and no sign of rust on the actual muffler. on my T/A now i have a SLP loudmouth with a borla muffler, which i enjoy.
