i just got my cat back the other day. i was planning on gutting the cat. but a friend told me to gut the muffler... pour a little gasoline in there and lite it on fire.. for about 20 seconds.... is this crazy or will this make it louder/deeper more SOUND

That sounds a little wierd to me. Has your friend ever tried it before? It could work but I think different manfacturers like Flowmaster have metal "deflectors" inside the muffler that pouring gasoline on and setting on fire would not effect. Also, if you decide to do it be really careful. You can't just set gasoline on fire. You have to have a fire going and pour gasoline on it or sometimes the fumes catch on fire. Fumes can spread and make a big fireball....like when you ignite a gas grill. I guess you could be the webisite's guinea pig and try it and let us know what happens

You may just be better off taking the muffler out and replacing it with a piece of straight pipe. Sometimes a hollow muffler or a hollow catalytic converter can make the exhaust tone sound hollow and kinda wierd. Wouldn't hollowing out the muffler kind of defeat the purpose of buying a cat-back system anyway? Not to flame but why didn't you just have some tips you like welded on and the muffler replaced with a straight pipe?

well i wasnt about to go catch the muffler on fire. i may/might try some stuff on the old one... i just didnt think it sounded right. im going to gut my cat. i just always thought you stick long screw driver in there jiggel it around and dump it.. keep on doing that... and then he tells me to lite this on fire... i never heard anything like that before... yeah this muffler i got is pretty hollow... its straight through on the 2 exits. and then you can see plenty of light on the inlet. and it looked mostly aluminum to me.

you might want to watch it when gutting the cat
if it is not clogged up you might lose a little power or might gain some but it will be iffy
you would be best off putting a straight pipe in there and this way if they ever go to smog testing in your area you can always have your stock cat put back on

Dude,......you gotta get some new friends!!!! The guy's tryin to kill ya!!!! Put that gas can up, and try a more logical approach to your adventure. Get a muffler that supplies your needs. I know for a fact that flowmaster makes a muffler for everyones needs. Their website has soundstreams to listen to to get an idea

haha alright. he is a big time cowboy with a jacked up truck with some loud @$$ exhaust. i dont think he relizes i dont want my car sounding like a jacked up truck. im going to most likly gut my cat, i was going to put this cat back system on sunday but cold weather and my oil sending unit went out, after i got that put in i didnt really want to crawl under the car in 10 degree weather. so tomorrow (tues) im taking it over to a friends house and gonna put my new cat back on... hopefully it doesnt take to long cuz i get off work at 6 and it will be 7 before we get started!

will straight pipe on a 305 tbi with a cat delete sound descent? Will it kill my exhaust valves? Whats the pros and cons? Thinkin bout 3inch echo tips with 2.5 inch pipe since there would be no muffler or cat to kinda give it some pressure. Give me some opinions!!

almost forgot......its a 5 speed too not that it really matters I guess

Yes, it is possible to blow out the baffles in a muffler. When the Safari Wagon was running on 5 cylinders (it burned up a bunch of plug wires) a fair amount of raw gas got in to the exhaust system. When I shut it off, it backfired like a howitzer, complete with 2-foot flame from the tailpipe. The explosion of the gas fumes in muffler put so much force on the baffles, it crumpled the muffler's case like a beer can. I wouldn't reccomend this method because it has a bad habit of tearing out your exhaust hangers.

Get a straightpipe and just be illegal.

and you are best off just putting a straight pipe in there rather then gutting the cat

if you gut the cat you are not going to gain much noise and prolly going to sound like tin or something
put a straight piipe in there

and then get a decent cat back or straight pipe for the rear
