I would like to install a quick release steerring wheel on a car we are building. I want to put it on the OEM column so I am wondering if anyone has done this and what was used.

Grant makes a kit that uses the GM splines and nut...or you can weld it on. Can't use turn signals though. At least not without modifications.

Fixing to install one in the next couple of weeks. Planning on using the 5/8 weld on style from speedway motors. Then if possible drilling the factory wheel to match the release bolt pattern.

Tony, why couldnt you use the turn signals? I would think you would be able to. Atleast I think you could the way we had planned on doing it. Doesnt matter to us much anyways, we took the turn signals out.

Everything I've read about the Grant QD's is that the cam for the signals isn't compatible with the adapter. This is what's keeping me from putting a QD steering wheel on mine. It's still "street legal" and I want to keep it that way. But the 6 point roll bar makes getting in and out a pain on a car without tilt steering. A QD would make it much easier.

Thanks for the help. This is a Cumpcar road race deal so I won`t need any turn signals. Just what I was looking for. Thanks again.

My '91 TA has an NRG quick-release hub on it. It was on the car when I bought it, so I don't know all the details. It doesn't interfere with the turn signals at all, though. It even includes an electrical connection for the horn, although mine's not currently hooked up.

I put one of those hex-type weld-on hubs on a race car that I had. It worked OK, but always had some slop in it, even when new. The NRG uses a different mechanism that is tight, with no slop.

my be I'm in left field, but would you only lose the self canceling portion?
then you could be the one that drives 20mils with your signal on.

to be street legal your signals don't have to be on your column.

Thanks for the help, but after looking at everything involved I have decided to take the OEM column out and put a bracket on the cage dash bar and a new shaft. Way less expensive.

Less expensive? Care to elaborate on what setup you are going with? Just curious. All Im doing is welding to the stock column. But I also per rules have to keep the stock steering column in stock location.

In this Fabrication forum search (3rd gen Camaro street stock build) and scrole down and you will see some photos. If you weld the adapter to the shaft on the stock column it will be pretty tough to get the lock plate up if you need to take it apart, but will work I guess.

I think I know what you are talking about now. Possible future dissasembly? Im not very worried about it. If the stock column falls apart we will do some cutting and welding, junkyard column, or both.

Post up how you end up doing it.
