86 IROC TPI question

hey guys, i have an 82 camaro sc, 2.8 v6 4 speed, well im soo tired of it so i'm thinkin about gettin rid of it. well i went lookin around today, and i found an 86 IROC, yellow. t-tops, auto.. im assuming 700r4? forgot to look at the mileage but it doesnt really matter to be, since if i bought it it would prob be rebuilt soon. anyways, it's in good condition, though it doesnt have a battery in it(it was sitting in the back of the lot) it has a price of 3900. I looked under the hood, TPI, i dont know if it is a 305 or 350, im guessing 305 since i've heard only 50 350's were made. what do you guys think about this price? i know these cars were only +-190 horses, what could i do ON A BUDGET to get more...these engines have a lot of potential dont they? i figure it would be easier to go buy an 8cyl instead of put one in my SC.
thanx
john

Car: Red 87 IROC-Z28 T-Top
Engine: 5.7 Tuned Port Injection
Transmission: 700R4 Auto
Axle/Gears: BW 9-Bolt 3.27
Its not a 350 if its stock because no 350's were officially sold to the public until 87. The 50 cars the year before were test cars.

Car: 1989 Corvette
Engine: 350 Tpi
Transmission: ZF 6 speed
Axle/Gears: Dana 44 3,33
Yes the 305 has much more to give than 190 hp. Just remove smog things and change the intake and exhaust and ofcourse the cam then you got a nice engine.
So its a fairly good buy if the engine is in a good shape.
So 3900 is a good price if its in a good shape.

well, i went out and talked to the guy about it today. and i also visited the Kelly Blue Book Website. well the blue book value of this car would be around 2500, in its condition. the paints a lil faded, but would be ok after a waxing. the engine looks CLEAN, it doesnt have a starter on it, but they will fix that. there's no radio or battery, they were both stolen. the interior is the saddle color, stained, but looks good. it has 141k miles, but that doesnt really matter. well, im going to look into trading my 98 for it, and ill see what he'll bring it down to. maybe sometime soon i'll be rollin in a yellow 86 IROC!!!
thanx

No, posi was an option.

I would try and get the car for less. If the stereo is missing, paint is faded, interior needs work, 141k miles, etc, I would offer the guy 1500-1800 for it. You are just assuming that a good wax will clean up the paint. W/o a battery, you don't know how well it runs. How long did it sit in the back lot? The suspension could be shot. This car sounds like a money pit, so low ball the seller and tell him it's not worth more because of the amount of work needed to get the car looking good again.

Also, 86 was pre clear coat. The paint could be damaged if faded too much

My mom bought a brand new yellow 86 iroc 305 car.
sitting there on the lot in 86 was a 350 iroc, black for sale.

fast forward years later.
I worked at that same dealership and was friends with the mechanic who PDI'd that black IROC in 86.
they did sell them in 86, and they are real.
he got in truoble for driving it on the PDI trip.... because of what it was!

worst part???
Mom was offered that car by the sales guy, and declined, because she didnt feel like keeping the black clean.
(another reason they haven't found her body.......)

I find it incredibly difficult to believe it was an actual, brand new, non-87, 350 TPI L98. Because not 1 person has ever claimed to own 1 or have proof of it. And Mr. SS at GM had said that there were only 350 TPI test cars before 87. It was probably 1 of the 1st few 87 models out, I'll bet it had the new interior, square automatic shift ****, and a third brake light in the spoiler.

Did that black car have T-Tops or air conditioning??

The car had air conditioning, but no T-Tops.
I even questioned him on the year, and he reconfirmed it was an 86. when the car came in from GM, it was kept in the shop at night.... This dealer has 18 acres of vehicles, on the Chevy lot alone, and the owner is Dave Greytak, a championship drag racer. I think it is probably the only reason they got one. I can say from selling there for a year, that they do have the capability to get things other dealers don't. I saw them do it with the newer stuff (the duramax pickups when they first came out, the Earnhardt edition Monte SS, extra Z06 Corvette's)
When Mom bought hers, their were no 87's out yet, as she was looking for one, due to being "newer"
They wouldnt even let anyone test drive the black one, as my dad was eyeing it up.

Hindsight being 20/20, I should have kept her yellow one..... kinda rare.
That car was what made me love them!

Incidentally, that same mechanic has a V8 S10, a Clean Monte SS with T-Tops, a 48 Chevy Coupe in the garage, and does all of the side work the dealer guys come across for rearends and transmissions.
(he's still got my 700r4....)

I'll double check, and post if i'm wrong!
