Lexan T-tops & RPOs

I have a 1989 Firebird with T-tops. When I bought it 3 years ago, the car had Lexan tops on it. The key for the tops matched the key for the car. A while later, the passenger's side one cracked (huge crack, all the way through) so I picked up a pair of glass ones at a junkyard.

I was just going through my RPOs and this is what my car has:

CC1 which is listed as "ROOF HATCH, REMOVABLE PANELS, GLASS"

Now, I was going through a list of all options for our cars and I found this code CC3 which is listed as "ROOF, HATCH, REMOVABLE PANELS. PLASTIC"

Which one of these codes is for the Lexan tops? I would think the CC3 because it mentions plastic.

Also, were ALL 1989 cars fitted with Lexan tops or were some glass and some Lexan?

I tend to think the Lexan tops that came with the car when I bought it are original, but now I'm confused about that RPO.

Thank you all so much.

Not sure about the RPO for lexan tops, but my 89 IROC has glass tops and a CC1 RPO. I have no reason to doubt my tops are original, but I also have no real way of knowing.

It's possible a previous owner swapped your tops to lexan and changed the locks... I think the locks are the same.

I'd say swapping to glass tops was a smart move... I havent heard many good things about the lexan ones.

Thanks chevy_cowboy. I think the original owner might have swapped the tops.

I just switched the locks out myself - took them out of the Lexan ones and put them into the glass ones I got. So that got me thinking *Hey, he might have switched the locks, too.*

I'm glad I switched to the glass.

Still curious about that CC3 code, though...

The rpo didn't change from CC1 regardless of glass or plastic. Every fbody from 89-92 that came with ttops originally had lexan and all carry the CC1 rpo code. GM had issues with the lexan tops from the start, and revised them at least three times. Service bullitins say to replace the tops with glass if the owner complains. That's why there are 89-up cars running around with glass tops.

Personally, I prefer the lexan. They're lighter, easier to deal with, and they're tinted darker.

That's funny. Both '90 Trans Ams that I had delivered 09/89 have glass T-Tops because I ordered them with glass T-Tops.

I agree with Drew, as my car stays cooler with the lexan tops on than it did with the glass ones I have.

I don't know if all of cars got them by default. At least with the TTA's. Seems that more have glass than Lexan. And its not any particular order either. I have Lexan and mine was 1387. Buddy of mine has two of them and both are glass. One is a festival car(<150)and the other is a later number than mine. Just seemed to be a random thing as far as I can tell.

And like you, I like the Lexan better.

From what I've read and seen, Lexan ttops were used from 88 or 89-92. GM had problems from the start and had a standing policy to replace them with glass anytime a customer complained. GM may have randomly shipped new cars with glass while the lexan tops were being revised, but its anyones guess exactly what the cars should have. In my opinion, the lexan tops offer more advantages for a daily driven car, and subsequently they're more desirable. I'd consider them correct for any 89-92 Fbody.

if i had to guess both lexans weigh about the same as 1 and 1/4 glass t-tops. there is a noticable difference in weight.
