1982 Iron Duke Camaro

CNN has the list of the 50 worst cars ever made. Says the 1982 Iron Duke Camaro is one of them due to the low HP 4-cylinder engine. Check it out.

Re: 1982 Iron Duke Camaro

http://www.time.com/time/specials/20...658527,00.html

"There was a time when 90 horsepower was a lot, and that time was 1932. Fifty years later, it was bupkis, especially under the hood of Chevy's beloved Mustang-fighter, the Camaro. As the base engine for the redesigned 1982 Camaro (and Pontiac Firebird), the 2.5-liter, four-cylinder "Iron Duke" was the smallest, least powerful, most un-Camaro-like engine that could be and, like the California Corvette, it was connected to a low-tech three-speed slushbox. So equipped, the Iron Duke Camaro had 0-60 mph acceleration of around 20 seconds, which left Camaro owners to drum their fingers while school buses rocketed past in a blur of yellow."

It not so much the car, it's the engine that was put in there.

I wonder how many automotive journalist that actually drive made up the list. There are many other questionable choices on that list.

Re: 1982 Iron Duke Camaro

yeah while i find it funny that the duke made the list some of those cars are questionable. like the delorean, i dont like the cars and frankly would never own one, but everything ive ever been told and heard about them makes them out as pretty nice cars why before their time, and i know they have quite a following.

makes me want to go out and race a school bus

but anyways, i went to look at the car, and the stuff on this car i could not beleive for such a low cost model, a 2.5l sport coupe was as cheap as you could go. but yet it has some very costly options, it was a deluxe blue inteior with blue Leather seats, had AC, what looked to be factory undercoating on the floor pans. has a cargo cover(not the roll out leather one, this one folded over the dip in the trunk, and was covered in blue carpet, never even seen that before) as well as some other options i cant rember at the moment the body, with the exceptions of the bottom of the doors is in absolute excelent condtion, for the most part the paint is great has some minor spot on the front bumper, and what looks to be some keying on the front passenger fender but pretty easly repairable stuff, while it looks like its original, it does not have any striping what so ever, so im not sure and the rpo list is gone, hoping the build sheet will be tucked up in a seat.(if anyone has suggestions on other more usual places for a 83 from ohio let me know) im going to pickup the car saturday, needs a new head but otherwise its in great shape and a steal for $500.

what are these super duty parts that were mentioned

Re: 1982 Iron Duke Camaro

The wasn't a SPID decal in '83(started in '84).The build sheet may or may not be there in a number of locations(under seats, under carpet - front or rear and in the doors). There will be a trim tag on the top center of the radiator support. It will give her build date, build plant, interior and exterior paint/trim codes, type of seats, whether t-top or not(CC1 will be there),sequential part of VIN and there are letter number combinations that denote type style of interior trim.

The cargo cover(RPO-D42)is an uncommon option in a Sport Coupe. Are the side panels carpeted also? That would indicate the luggage compartment trim(RPO-B48).And a center console with carpet sides would indicate custom interior(interior code may be 22N for blue custom interior with vinyl seats).

On the super duty parts there were a Pontiac program. As suggested before check the S-Series and Fireo boards for mor info.I have some information I have to find as I had a '89 Grand Am with the 2.5.

the way you implied this it like you were comparing a 82 vette to a new for 82 camaro.82 vette didn't have a 3 speed auto they had the 700r4 .. and there was no california engine, they all had the 350cfi motor. I think your thinking of the 81 vette or was it the 80 vette that had the california LG4

Re: 1982 Iron Duke Camaro

You are most welcome and if you have a problem decoding the tag it post here and I'm sure someone here can.

The 2.5 parts do interchange between the S-Series and F-Body and I'm pretty certain the heads all interchange. There were changes to improve driveability. The eight digit of the VIN should be a 2 for the LQ9 2.5 TBI.There is a LQ8 2bbl carb(VIN code F) listed for '83 but I'm not sure if/where it was used.Check this link at S-Series.org for more info

Re: 1982 Iron Duke Camaro

Whoever made up that list is pretty much an idiot.

I worked at the Chevy dealership in the mid 80's and a 4cyl Camaro was an absolute rocket compared to the diesel Chevettes.

Re: 1982 Iron Duke Camaro

Whoever made that list comes across as a tree hugger, complaining about the size of vehicles, the gas mileage, and the environmental impact of a vehicle. The article reads like an E.P.A. rant session, not an actual vehicle perspective article, lol.

True, but I think the point of the part about the H2 and some others on that list was not that they were environmental disasters... It was more that there timing on the entry into the market couldn't have been more stupid.

For example GM was crushing EV1s at the same time that Toyota was introducing the Prius.

Its sad that GM has a long history of the right cars at the wrong time.

Another example of this, of course, is the death and resurrection of the Camaro. When the new Mustang hit a couple of years ago it was Ford's number one selling car. Someone at GM noticed and they scrambled to get a Camaro back into production. I fear that by the time the new Camaro is ready for sale... The market will be saturated with 'Stangs
