Good deal on 87 TA??

I've got a chance to buy an 87 TA for $1800 and was wondering if you guys thought its a good deal.

Very straight body, all original, paint decent, interior average, T-tops and everything works on it. Very clean and original car with 95k miles. Cool thing is it has the 5 speed manual trans, but is not a TPI car, it has the LG4 305 in it. I had an 87 with a 305 TPI years ago and it rocked, not sure if I would be disappointed with this or not.

Re: Good deal on 87 TA??

honestly you would probably be initially disapointed, the nice thing about the 1987 LG4 is you can basically install a 350, or a 400 and still use stock everything else. TPI needs tuning.

1800 is a reasonable deal IMHO, If its reasonable to really clean I could probably sell it next year for a profit here in MI.

Re: Good deal on 87 TA??

Went to look at the car yesterday (saw only one pic and description via email before). Car was about as described, only the headliner was completely gone. Honestly everything was just a shade worse than I imagined in my head. Can't honestly say it was described bad though. I ended up getting it for $1300, not bad since he originally wanted $3000!

You should post some pics of the new car.

Re: Good deal on 87 TA??

Here is one pic of the car that the guy used in his ad. I will try to get more pics up next week. I really like the 5 speed but am a bit disappointed in the LG4. The car doesn't need much work though (in my opinion) to be pretty nice, and since it is 20 years old it qualifies for historic tags! I am a bit more of a purist though, and still would rather have an original TPI car, so this one might end up for sale in the near future.

Re: Good deal on 87 TA??

Based on that pic, it looks like a pretty good deal.

But unless the owner painted or replaced the spoiler, that black spoiler looks like the '86 version. It should've been painted to match the body on 1987 and later cars.

So that makes me wonder where the third brake light is located. If it's mounted high on the outside of the glass hatch, that would also suggest it's an '86. It was mounted down on the deck lid, underneath the spoiler in 1987.

Car looks good, though, just verify your model year.

Re: Good deal on 87 TA??

Third brake light is under the spoiler as it should in 87. I am sure the car is an 87, the spoilers all had tons of trouble cracking and this one was just refinished and prepped for paint, thats all.

Re: Good deal on 87 TA??

Does the spoiler have a rough texture to it? or is it smooth?

In 1985 & 1986 the Aero spoiler would have been textured, similar to the Dash pad texture, starting in 1987 thru 1990 they were a smooth finish, and painted to match the body.

Re: Good deal on 87 TA??

Wow I actually didn't know that John. I checked and the spoiler is very much as you describe, black with a texture very similar to the dash, although there are a couple very small flakes of it missing and it looks like flame red metallic underneath. Also, the third brake light is under the spoiler as is correct for 87. Finally got some more pics to share.

More pics, I need to wash it still. First I will be taking care of some interior problems.

Re: Good deal on 87 TA??

I think that basically the spoilers are the same from 85-90, with the fore mentioned texture of the 85 & 86.

I am not sure, matter of fract I am 97% positive that the 85 & 86 did not have the bolt mounting points on the bottom side of the spoiler like the 87-90 did. I would think that the pieces would fit under it and it would look fine but the brake light might not be mounted to the spoiler like the original was .

What is the last 5 numbers in your VIN, if its a really early number it may explain some things as it may be a cross over part fgrom 1986.

Looking at your pix it appears that the car is a repaint. Although an older repaint. The reason I think this is there is no stripe which was common with the 2 tone cars to hide the line between the 2 colors. Your Trans Am decals are 87-90 style with the outline.

Re: Good deal on 87 TA??

Last five of the VIN is 25865.

The guy did say the front clip was repainted several years back, but not the whole car. My old 87 was actually the exact same paint colors and scheme and did not have the stripe separating the two colors either, but I know what you mean by that. I think in the late 80's they stopped doing that for some reason, because I always see that on early-mid 80's cars with the two tones.
