Collectors Car Insurance Quotes

I received two quotes today:

American Collectors Insurance - agreed value $14,000; 2,500 mi/yr; 500k liability limit: quote $377/yr

Classic Auto Insurance - agreed value $12,000; 3,000 mi/yr; 500k liability limit; quote $284/yr

Neither company is "rated" but this may not be an issue because of the small market these type companies have.

Does anyone have any experience with either of the two or know if they are legit?

Re: Collectors Car Insurance Quotes

Hagerty is one of the biggest in the country from my understanding... http://www.hagerty.com/

Your car does have to be so old typically, I want to think 20 or 25 years. And I know that Hagerty is underwritten by another company, I know it was CNA, which is now Encompass.

Since I live in Michigan I have normal Car insurance on my cars, I DO have an appraisal WITH my insurance company, one is $25K and the other is $15K. BUT in the winter time I take all of the insurance off except Comprehensive (Fire theft, glass breakage etc) Basically it covers the car if someone stole the car, the car catches on fire, someone breaks into my barn and damages it etc. Typically it runs me about $100 a year for Comp, depending on the car.

In the Summer time (I know its always summer in FL) I put full coverage on the car and I can drive wherever I want, whenever I want and do whatever I please with the car. On my Insurance forms they call it "Pleasure" I always figured if something happened at work (which probably technically I should not drive it to work but I do on rare occasion) I could say that I was going to have some work done on it, or I was going to work on it where I work as I do have some tools here that I do not have at home.

Full coverage is about $700 per car, but I only have that on it 6 months a year...

By the time I pay my insurance I end up paying about $350 to $400 per year per car. It works out really well if I never take a car out of storage... Like my poor old 67 Buick Riviera...

Correct me if I'm wrong but all household drivers usually have to be older than 25 right? I'm 19 and I could probably benefit from collectors insurance but I seriously doubt anyone would insure me....

Okfoz, what you do is word for word what I do as well. I thought I wrote it and forgot!!!!
I find what we do seems to be the best all around scenario. I parked for at least 6 months of the year too, and taking it all into account, the cost and coverage is pretty reasonable.

With Hagerty it doesn't matter; as long as you have a daily driver you're good to go.

Not really, sometimes it drops all the way down into the 50's. But I suck it up and drive her all 12 months.

The two I listed: American Collectors Insurance and Classic Auto Insurance were the only two with which my '88 qualified. Anyone have experience or know of either company?

I have an agreed value collector car policy through State Farm on my '71 Trans Am. For $10,000 coverage its runs right around $100 a year. This is with a clean driving record.

Re: Collectors Car Insurance Quotes

I went with Grudny collector car insurance...

I have a weird situation... I'm legally blind and have no license... so I applied with my Father (which they asked me to do) and gave me coverage...

First year, $167 for $10,000 agreed upon value.

Next year, I upped the value to $25,000 (added Knight Rider Dash, interior sound deadening, car stereo, alarm, electronics, ProCharger, etc...
$375 or so...

They do have rules...
No age limit on cars, though I did speak to a person, and the older cars get an even better rate than 81 and newer (seems odd to me)...
Licensed drivers must be 25 or older.
Must not be main vehicle.
Must not be backup vehicle.
Must be garage kept.
Unlimited Mileage.

Before Grundy, Allstate told me to re title MY car in my father's name, wanted $1500 for a year & would only value it as a 91 Firebird, not a Knight Rider replica...

I, too, have Grundy with $15k coverage at $243/year. I will be increasing it's value at the next renewal. Because of the Barrett-Jackson and other collector auctions, they contacted me and suggested that I increase the value due to the mileage on my car.

Re: Collectors Car Insurance Quotes

I have a stated value policy with State Farm. We get the multi car, "pleasure use", good driving record, and old people discounts. Since I have another car that is assigned as my daily driver, they don't care if I drive the car to work, as long as we don't excede 2500 miles a year. The one thing that we all need to watch, is that even with a stated/agreed value policy, in the event of a total loss, the insurance company will have an independent apprasial of the car's value at the time of loss, and pay the apprased value, not the stated value amount. The laws may vary from state to state. The State Farm underwriter called my agent, and made sure that I understood how it works when we bought the policy.

Im 18, have State Farm and pay..... 850$ for 6months, with discount for airbags, safe driver discount [no tickets of accidents], and one for my parents never having any accidents either.

So 145ish a month, dont think I got it that bad.

But id happily take the 1400$ a year, lol

Re: Collectors Car Insurance Quotes

The main difference (I think) is that car is your daily driver, or main mode of transportation.... That's why the collector car insurance is a lot less... It's meant to cover your hobby car, not daily driver.

But I guess if you're loaded & don't work much, and have at least one other car, you could drive it every day with no miles restriction via Grundy's...

My Formula is with American Hobbyist (Collectors)-$20,000 agreed value,3K mi/yr,no liability in NC, $0 deductible for $280/yr. NC's insurance rules didn't allow collector insurance companies to sell liability insurance when I bought my coverage but I've heard this may have changed. My liabilty is with State Farm whose stated value policy didn't impress me at all.

Re: Collectors Car Insurance Quotes

One thing to know about Grundy is that your daily driver also needs to be newer than the collector car. For most of us that isn't an issue, but for the guy with a 92 collector car and an 88 Cavalier as their daily driver will not get insured thru Grundy. Also note that Grundy has no mileage limitation like the other companies.

Re: Collectors Car Insurance Quotes

I tried going with Hagerty to put my 2 T/A's on a low miler / classic insurance policy, after their website quoted me around $160 per year for both. They wanted hardcopies proving I had a daily driver car besides those 2 cars, which I don't; I just borrow my mom's car when needed, etc. Hagerty also wanted photos of the T/A's in a garage, etc. Too much hassle just to save a few bucks, so then I went with State Farm with a standard policy, and I think I'm paying around $460 a year now. I specifically asked State Farm if they had any low mile policies and they said no, and I too am in NC. .. any help on that would be great. What specifically would I ask them for?

Re: Collectors Car Insurance Quotes

Probably the reason that your State Farm agent told you that they did not offer a low mileage policy, is that you don't have a daily driver listed. We live in NC, and also use State Farm. We own two Crown Vic's, that are my wife and my daily drivers. I get a low mileage discount on my T/A and my snow truck, an 87 Ramcharger. There are no other restrictions on the policies, except a 2500 mile limit per year, and they do send out an audit every year or two. I have another truck, a one ton crewcab diesel, and they don't give any discounts on that one because it is over 10K GVW. You may be able to list one of your cars as your daily driver, and get a low mileage discount on the other? State Farm does have a low mileage, rating called "pleasure use."

Re: Collectors Car Insurance Quotes

There is no way around the "daily driver" scenario. All collector car policies will require that the car be garaged and that there is another vehicle that is newer than the collector car as a daily driver. Their reasoning for that is if the daily driver is older and breaks down, the collector car might be used as transportation. If my 2006 Silverado broke down and was in the shop for 2 days, I can guarantee that the IROC-Z would not be used as a backup. That's what they are looking for to get those best rates.

If you mom isn't around and you need to go somewhere, you will probably just take one of the TAs and that is what they want to avoid.

Re: Collectors Car Insurance Quotes

I got a web quote from Grundy's for $233.00. $15k agreed value and 500k limits. I'm going to follow up on it.

The Classic Auto quote is questionable:
Pay full sum in advance without a binder - sure pal.
$15k Property Damage Limits - well what about the other car - sure pal.

BTW - any help on a mech issue will be greatly appreciated:

1. My IROC is my "pleasure car" but in the summer I'll absolutely drive it to work while my daily driver sits in the driveway a few days a week. And when either mine or my wife's DD is in the shop I drive the IROC. Does this preclude me from "collectors insurance"?

2. Our single car garage is storage and the IROC is parked in the driveway. Does this preclude me from "collectors insurance"?

Right now I think I'm paying Allstate $40 / month (liability only) and Grundy is quoting $175 / yr for $10k agreed to price for full coverage.

Grundy states cannot be driven to and from work & must be garage kept... For a couple hundred dollars difference, it would suck if they denied a claim...

Re: Collectors Car Insurance Quotes

I believe you have to have it garaged for collector car insurance... I guesthe logical argument would be... If its such a "Collector CAr" then why would you let it sit outside in the rain???

Referring to your age?

Probably not.

Your car? Yes, mine is a 91...

I was told, all driver's must be licensed and 25 years or older...

I'm legally blind & will probably never see well enough to get a license... You will have to pay premiums because of being young, but 25 will come soon enough...

Re: Collectors Car Insurance Quotes

Actually my brothers friend has a 65 mustang with a v8 in it and he has collector car insurance under his own policy and its running like 15k/250$ a year and hes 20. He also has a daily driver which he pays on but I was surprised he got cc insurance considering how young he is.

Can not be Grudy, they have a line in their policy that states no one under 25 will be covered if they drive the car.

When I signed the paperwork for Grundy they included an additional addendum that I had to signed that stated if a driver under 25 has an accident with the car that they will not cover it.

FYI: Grundy 12k/$203!!!

Yes but the rate will not be as cheap.

Re: Collectors Car Insurance Quotes

My local State Farm agent told me he would insure my car to whatever it was appraised at by another company of my choosing (I could increase it if I want). 1,000 or so miles a year, garage kept, no a back up car, not required to have a antique plate on it.

I will not insure it for less then 15k, Ill get some perks with it also since my wife has been with them for a long time. Oh, and they know its a built car

I want to get a low mile IROC for the wife in a few years, just hope they Barret and them don't put that out of reach for me.

Right now the ones I would like are going for around 10k.
