What's the 8th digit of the VIN? That might narrow it down, but really what does it matter? Are you going to restore the car to 100% original? If not, don't worry about it. $160 is a deal even for a base model.

the 8th digit is a f...im thinking of making it a drag car there is no rust on it what so ever whole body is in good shape but i wanna know if its a iroc...it has a 5.7 tpi but i knew right away it was a 5.o cause the 8th digit is a f..it has 3 iroc rims

Re: How to tell my new project is a true iroc z?

What does the tire card say in the drivers side door jam? If it shows 245/50VR16 tires you know it's an Iroc. The F indicates a 305TPI, so you know it's at least a Z28. The key differences between the Z28 and the Iroc that year were the wheels, and emblems. Either way if it's not a numbers matching car, that's going to be a bigger hit then being a Z28 without the Iroc option.

Since IROC's were equipped with 16-inch rims in 87, check the door placard for size. Anything but a 16 and no cigar.

Great minds, Drew, think alike .

Body wise, the Z28/IrocZ in 87 are both identical. Aside from the cosmetic markings, and wheels, they're the same. The Z28 could have all of those features.

The VIN will not tell you if it is an IROC or not.

Re: How to tell my new project is a true iroc z?

The / designates and/or. The VIN number for a LB9 Z28 and a LB9 Irocz are going to be indentical except for the sequence number and check digit. There's nothing to designate a difference.

Re: How to tell my new project is a true iroc z?

What about the wonderbar above the front sway bar? If it's a true IROC it should have one being it will have the 16" wheels. It can be easily added, but if equally rusty as the rest of the underneath, and nothing looks modified, than it can be assumed original.

Bringing up this old post from the dead for informational purposes. Irocs have the B4Z option code on the sticker in the glovebox. That is all.

You brought up an old post to state incorrect information! Not all IROC-Zs have the B4Z code. Only 1985-1987. In 1988-1990, all IROC-Zs had the Z28 RPO code.

The OP stated that he had an 87 irocZ and that's what I was referring to.

Re: How to tell my new project is a true iroc z?

Ok. In the future, you might want to be more specific. I don't want someone in the future referencing your post, telling someone that they don't have an IROC-Z because the B4Z code is missing. After many years, and seeing how words get twisted in politics, we need to be as accurate as possible in our posts. Thanks for contributing and clarifying.
