Horn Button Woes
Ok Ive located my horn pigtail (in my rehatch storage go figure). Ive got my wheel pulled blasted and repainted, I have a close friend does leather work who is gonna rewrap my leather for me cheap old leather was gone. One small problem cant find a horn button. Classic Ind. advertises just the cap itself no innards for it. Plus in the email they sent they said they are not even out of production yet. I need a complete round horn button guts and all that will work with the three spoke wheel on an 89 IROC. I would settle for any that'll work that i can reman to look original. Guess Im lookin in the wrong places. Dont think the grant buttons'll work with my wheel.Really dont wanna buy a Grant wheel as I wanted to stay original as possible The wheels looking great and Id hate to just abandon it. Any suggestions guys ?

Re: Horn Button Woes
Have you tried the classifieds? Most of the time the only problem is metal clip on the horn button comes off the back. It's easy enough to bond the clip back on the button with epoxy. 10 years ago you could find decent horn buttons in the junkyards, but people were removing the stock steering wheels because the leather on the wheel was bad. It shouldn't be too hard to find just the horn button.

It says no reserve. Within 24 hours you'll know what it'll cost to get a nice one.
Another option is a Berlinetta horn button... It'll fit, even though it's not correct. If you can get the cap without the guts as a reproduction later maybe you can use the guts of a Berlinetta cap. Or get creative and shave the Berlinetta logo and replace it with something else. I've probably got a couple Z28/Iroc horn buttons in storage, but I'm pretty sure I've got one per Z28/Iroc steering wheel I've got in storage. I checked the junk bin I can get at, and came up empty.

1. That ebay button may "look new", but it is not. New ones aren't that textured and the ridge around it would be more defined.
2. Still not a bad price if you ask me, so far anyway.

Re: Horn Button Woes
I went crazy and bought a few spares a couple months back when I found them. There is a guy near me that was selling one for 40, very nice shape, but they are getting harder and harder to find. Just keep your eyes peeled and I'm sure one will pop up

Re: Horn Button Woes
There are supposed to be two of them... The wiring just goes to one, then to the other in a daisy chain. They ground through the mounting strap. It sounds like you get to rebuild the system from just about scratch. I'd start by just running a fused jumper wire from the positive battery terminal to the tab on the horn. If it doesn't blow loud and clean, get a different set of horns.

Re: Horn Button Woes
The front one is the A-note, the back one is the F-note, according to the Service Manual.
I might have a pair of used, stock horns in my junk bin. If you'd be interested, I could see if I can lay may hands on them and find out if they still work.

Hey thanks man .Would just need the A-note with pig tail if you have that too .The pig tail is still attached to F-Note with wire to spare so I'll soulder it. Lemme know how much you want for it.

Re: Horn Button Woes
Oh man... So close... I dug through my box of junk parts and actually found both horns. Then I went to test them... The F note horn worked OK, so I hooked up the A note and for a fraction of a second it blew loud as can be. But just as quickly as it sounded it stopped. I double checked all my connections, but I think the blue smoke got out. If you look at the pic you can see how the brackets are different for the two, and the markings to know which is which.
The wiring isn't really anything special, just a couple of insulated spade terminals, the wire from the car and the wire to the other horn go into one terminal, then another terminal goes on the tag end. The only ones I've got laying around are still attached to Firebird headlight harnesses.
Here's what I did on my 3.1L Firebird, I got a pair of horns from a later model Grand Am with weatherpack type harnesses. Then I separated the brackets from the old horns and soldered them onto the new horns. Then I just had to bolt em in, connect a ground and the power wire.

Re: Horn Button Woes
The 87 LT is basically the same as the 84-86 Berlinetta without the digital stuff, hence the horn button is virtually identical. I didn't mention it earlier because the LT production numbers suggest not many were built.
The one on Ebay just ended at almost $80 + shipping. Makes me wish I'd horded more of them back when they were really easy to find.

that's great!
BTW, if there's any other LT owners that need a horn button, contact me, I'd be glad to make the same trade that crash did! mine is in mint condition
