Average 1986 Sport Coupe Camaro?

I found my gem, sitting at a concrete factory. I noticed it was sitting there for a few weeks and one day I decided to stop by and check it out. As I approached this precious jewel, I began to notice the specs of this vehicle. T-tops, factory five speed, carbeurated 305 and the list goes on. I called the owner and asked him to meet with me, we discussed the price of this vehicle and I couldnt believe that the price he was asking was only $1200. Needless to say within the next few days I owned this vehicle. I started my journey of running down the RPO codes and decoding the VIN.

I've always been inspired by Camaro's, especially as a child growing up my uncle had two, 1975 LT and a 1984 Z28.

There may be alot of 86 sport coupes out there today with the same options as mine but I've never seen one.

Re: Average 1986 Sport Coupe Camaro?

Looks well above average for a Sports Coupe since most of them were 2.8/auto's with no options and hideous base steel wheels. If it's got power windows and a/c also, then I'd say it's a nice find, particularly for the money, and assuming it runs and drives.

Re: Average 1986 Sport Coupe Camaro?

Thanks for your reply!

Yes it came factory with power windows (A31), a/c (C60), the black racing stripes (DX5), and cruise control (K34). The car ran and drove good when I got it and still does. The only difference now is I replaced the 305 with a 350 four bold main and I put IROC wheels on it. I've did a lot of research on this car. In my opinion I think my car is very unique for its kind.

Unique? Maybe for a Sport Coupe? Valuable? No.

Keep it looking nice, no matter what trim it is, 3rd gens in due time will become more rare.

Re: Average 1986 Sport Coupe Camaro?

The sport coupes have less dollar value than the Iroc's or RS models and are less likely to become collectible. On the other hand, if that model makes you happy and you prefer that over thet other models then thats all the value you really need.

Re: Average 1986 Sport Coupe Camaro?

Wow yeah, that's loaded for a Sport Coupe. Like Carlos said though, don't let it go to your head! You've got a unique car that I would consider somewhat desirable, but that doesn't make it worth nearly as much as even a base model Z28 from the same year in the same condition/miles. Still a fun car to have though, and a good find.

Re: Average 1986 Sport Coupe Camaro?

You're right a sport coupe don't and probably won't ever have the same value as a Z28, RS, or IROC. However just like every camaro owner whether it be a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th generation, 4 cyl, V6, or V8 each camaro has a different value to its owner. I do appreciate the honesty from every reply I get though.

Re: Average 1986 Sport Coupe Camaro?

true, when i was a kid you could find 1st gen SS/RS camaros on the back row of any car lot for $500-$1000. big block cars with nothing wrong with them, people were trading them in for ....chevettes. now, that same SS/RS is near $30,000.the same will hold true with 3rd gens.

I like a Sport Coupe because you don't see them, and everyone and their brother has a third gen with ground effects. Keep it nice...hope you saved the old 305!

Nice score! My Sport Coupe is an 83... Was factory 5 speed with carb 305! My suspension is built with all the goodies including sfcs, with a decently built 350... Rebuilt the stock T5... I love this car... I think they have more personality!

excuse my lazy fog light, and wheels are my winter wheels.

Re: Average 1986 Sport Coupe Camaro?

SWEET RIDES guys! Hopefully one of these days i'll get both of my camaros the way I want them. I really wished I could've kept the 305 so that it would be a #'s matching but sadly #2 rod broke in half and busted the block. Oh well can't win them all, and anyways I can't complain about buying a 350 4bolt main for $150 just cause the guy thought it was a 305.

Here is a picture of my 1986 Spt Coupe. Exterior is original and needs restoration. Current drive train is L98 350 with cam, Performer intake and 650 DP. 700 r4 with 2800 stall. Strange 12 bolt with 4.10 gears. Let me know what you think.

i disagree...
i think in due time the sport coupes will be more valuable than the higher models. In part that they aren't as common as IROC Z28 or RS. They also tend to rust a lot faster than the higher models so if you find one in good shape save it!!!

My first car was an 87 Camaro SC 2.8L Auto, with T TOPS. AC, Cruise. And was completely original. if i found another one i would buy it in a heartbeat

Re: Average 1986 Sport Coupe Camaro?

I was at a local car show this past Saturday and someone had a clean dark teal green SC hard top there. Had 15" steelys painted to match with dog dish caps, rear wheels were like 10" wide, about a 4" cowl hood, very clean car. He did not have the hood poped, but it did have a B&M shifter in it. I might go back up there this Sat so if it's there I will try to find the owner.

SC are not my style, but cool none the less. Sounds like the OP got a nice score.

even if there were only a a handful of SC's remaining, they wouldnt be as valuable as a Z28.

Why would the SC's rust faster than a Z28 or RS?

There were far more standard Camaros produced than IROCs & Z28s. The only reason that there aren't a lot left is that there's no demand for the cars, and that's not likely to change. Sport Coupes will never have the same demand that IROCs and Z28s will have, and will never hold the same value. There are thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of rare cars out there that are worthless because nobody wants them.

I'm willing to bet that there are probably less 88 Berettas on the road than 88 Corvettes, but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for a Beretta to be worth more than the Corvette.

Re: Average 1986 Sport Coupe Camaro?

Sorry to jump into a different forum with a totally of topic question... but i cant post my own thread for some reason and i need help!!!

I have an 87 Z-28. has a 383 stroker in it and a T5 Transmission. I was driving just yesterday and this incredibly loud bang came from under the car around the transmission area. Happens sometimes when i push in the clutch to shift, even happens when im in gear, accerate then let off the gas it makes a loud bang.

I took a look underneath and tried to see if anything is loose.. only thing i noticed is a beam bolted to my differential that runs the length of my drive shaft is hanging free up by the tail of the bell housing. Dont know it is suppose to be like that but it appears to be fresh scraping marks on it. Could this be the problem? Does anyone jnow what they call that beam?

Re: Average 1986 Sport Coupe Camaro?

That is a major problem, that is the tourque arm which attaches to the T5. It either broke the bolts, came loose, or broke the mount that mounts it to the transmission.

Nice Sport Coupe. well optioned. I have an 87 SC i have had since 2000 when I was 17. Mine is option package 3 so it has the LG4, deluxe interior, gauge package, A/C, Cruise control, Tilt, 15" wheels. Also has the factory door edge guards. Hears a pic in it's currant state I am slowly trying to restore her back to her former glory. I love this car and will probably be buried in it LOL.
