Good article. I thoroughly enjoy the comments by the Blue Oval boys afterwards, what a bunch of fools. And finally someone is saying what we've been thinking for some time. The 80's was a huge decade for the automotive industry.

yeap...only comments from loyalists of the oval camp. Hence why the rivalry between ford and gm fans will keep going on for years! Hehe...

in any case it was nice reader's read. I enjoyed reading what the 80s was like. Since i'm a 80s child..i've always remembered cars like the irocs, trans ams, and even the monte carlos/grand nationals driving by house...can you tell i've grown up a GM man!? Yet my dad was a blue oval boy and touted they were the best cars ever built....(really a pinto, a tempo, and a escort...were great cars?) LOL! Only reason why he now likes gm is because of Jeff Gordon and that $300.00 Buick Le Saber he bought awhile ago...

The 80's was really the best of the worst years for hot rods. Each company had their own version of EFI which has led to today's muscle shootouts.

Now statements about chrysler weren't accurate. Chrysler was playing with turbo 4 in the early 80s'. Obviously we forget about the '85 Omni GLH, putting out an impressive 146 hp, 168 lb-ft, 122 mph, 0- 60 mph 7.5 sec.

Out of a 2.2 4 banger, thats some serious ****. Considering its evolution through a decade wound up at a staggering 224 hp, 218 ft/lbs, 141 mph, 0-60 5.8 sec...

So the truth is I'm not sure GM was playing with its cars well enough.

So enough said, the T/A; Camaro; and corvette are probably the best known GM iconic cars...So I will give them that.

To be fair I think the Grand National could join that list speaking strictly 80's. The thing I was always told with the Mopar cars of that era with any respectable power was that they hadn't figured out how to combat torque steer so when you dropped the hammer you had better hold on.
Like this article said, at the beginning of the 80's the Trans Am was a joke and by the end it was the fastest it had ever been. So that is definitely worthy of respect in my books.

I bought a brand new 1984 Chrysler Laser Turbo 2.2 5 Speed (I still don't know why) and as mentioned, the torque steer was not kind! But my, it really hauled butt for a 4 banger turbo. I was impressed.... Then I woke up one morning and ordered a loaded 1985 Bright Blue metallic TA 305 TBI.

I love the arguments of the Blue oval guys just whining and crying that the mustang was not the premise of the article... ONe guy is going off about how the mustang would be faster if the TTA did not have a Turbo... Then goes on about how the Mustang was faster than the Camaro and Trans Am, and the fact that the Mustang outsold the Camaro and Firebird...

I held my tongue, and let it pass... The only reason why the Mustang was faster was it was a cheap econobox with a big engine. It was only a little bigger than Chevette with a V8, and you add to that the sales were higher because it was a cheap POS in the day and was very homely, even with the gaudy GT from 1987-93...

I think the mustang of today (05-14) is much more attractive, I wouldn't mind owning one of those with the right trim.

EXACTLY! And what were those sales ratio's to the 3 gen? A LOT. "Buy a Mustang", that's all I ever heard!

While the new stangs do a lot well, I think they are ugly, esp the new celica/Taurus looking thing.
I'd rather have the fox mustang.
I'll take a 93 cobra, cobraR or a 92-3 blue GT with silver/gray bottom, gray int and a white or black top.

scottmoyer: Good choice on the Mustang. I am as die hard a GM fan as there is, but I was going to shell out for a NEW toy, I couldn't bring myself to buy the UGLY Camaro. It would be a Mustang.
